Bob was a man whose life was defined by a love of sports, both as a standout player and a celebrated official. His athletic journey began at Du Quoin High School, where he was a memorable figure on the basketball court.

Moreover, his talent carried him to professional baseball, where he fulfilled his dream by signing a contract with the Cincinnati Reds organization. He spent two seasons as a right-hand pitcher honing his craft in the minor leagues before an injury ended his playing career.

However, Bob’s passion for the game was far from over. He transitioned to officiating and became one of the most respected referees in the state of Illinois.

He was a constant presence at high-stakes tournaments for over three decades, officiating the IHSA State Football Championship for three consecutive years from 1991 to 1993.

Beyond the court and field, Bob served as president of the local Khoury League.

He was elected to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000 and will be posthumously inducted into the Du Quoin High School Hall of Fame on September 26, 2025.

Bob was a pillar of the Du Quoin community known as the man of principle and kindness.

He believed in the values of hard work, safety, and faith, and became a dedicated member of the First Christian Church of Du Quoin.

Outside of his community life, he built a distinguished 26-year career as a safety supervisor with Consol Coal Company at the Burning Star Mines #2, #3, and #4. His leadership and meticulous attention to detail ensured the safety and well-being of colleagues.

While his professional accomplishments were significant, Bob’s most incredible pride and joy was his family.

He was a devoted husband to his wife of 60 years, Barbara Barron Conte, with whom they built a beautiful legacy. He was a loving father to his two sons, Bob Conte and his wife, Trina, and Brad Conte and his wife, Michele.

Bob is also survived by his brother, Gene Conte. He shared a close bond with his grandchildren, Brandon Conte and wife Kelcie Conte, Brie Roland and husband Brandon Roland, Nick Conte and wife Ciera Conte, Garrett Conte, and Zach Conte.

Moreover, his legacy of love continues through his seven adored great-grandchildren, Alivia, Aubree, James, Jordan, Walker Conte, Keegan, and Indie Roland.

On the other hand, his parents, Wante and Mildred Conte, preceded him in death.

Furthermore, Bob’s generosity was unmatched, and his presence was a gift to all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered for his sportsmanship, integrity, and boundless kindness.

In honoring Bob’s wishes, there will be no formal service or visitation.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the NubAbility Athletics Foundation, or may be accepted at the funeral home.

His family will also establish a scholarship in his memory to further honor his commitment to helping others.

Nonetheless, the Conte family extended their heartfelt gratitude to all the friends, family, caregivers, and the compassionate staff of Southern Illinois Hospice.

Rest in Peace, Robert J. “Bob” Conte.
