The rugby and local community are mourning the tragic loss of John “Aldo” Lyons, a beloved former Chairman and lifelong supporter of Glamorgan Wanderers RFC.
On Thursday, 25 September, Lyons tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident while returning home to Cardiff after attending a recent bike night.
A local lad educated at Mostyn High School, John Lyons built a life rooted in family, friendship, and passion.
Affectionately known as “Aldo,” he thrived in the automotive industry, enjoyed riding motorcycles, and cherished every moment with his family.
His commitment to rugby was equally unwavering—whether donning boots to play, running the line, carrying the sponge, or serving as Team Manager, Lyons gave his all to the Wanderers.
He eventually rose to the position of Chairman, becoming known as a supreme organiser who was always ready to lend advice, encouragement, and a smile.
“Every team has that one player who, when the chips are down, rallies those around him to go again. That was John,” said a club member.
“No matter the adversity he faced, he always got up and carried those around him forward.”

Lyons’ impact extended far beyond the pitch. Friends and family remember him as generous, funny, and deeply caring.
Paul Lyons, his son, expressed the family’s heartbreak:
“Not only did I lose my father, but also my best friend, my hero, and my go-to. We feel robbed as a family and taken too soon. My mum lost her soulmate… I promise Dad I will look after Mum and Sarah as best as I can. I won’t let you down. I love you forever.”
