Timea Babos was born on May 10, 1993, in Sopron, Hungary. She was born as the second child to father Csaba Babos and mother Zsuzsanna Babos.

Babos’ parents used to own a sports facility in Sopron where Csaba was a tennis club coach.

Originally, Babos was a swimmer. Neither Babos nor her parents planned for her to play tennis. Because they thought, Babos would be better at swimming.

At swimming, she had already participated in many events along with the national championship.

But God had a different plan for Babos. She found swimming difficult also hard work. So, Babos pleaded with her parents to play tennis.

In the beginning, Babos played tennis for fun, but later, after seeing her talent, her dad focused more on tennis rather than swimming.

Babos was always fascinated and encouraged to watch her sister Susie tennis practice with her dad.

By the time, Babos had started playing tennis, her older sister had already won many Hungarian National Championships. Later, while studying at Berkley, she also won NCAA titles. 

Break-Through

At the age of eight, Babos’s parents signed her into a local tennis club. Just a few months later, she started participating in local events.

Soon after, Babos qualified for U-12 National Championship after winning four qualification matches. Later, in the next few weeks, Babos won Hungarian National Championship just at the age of 9.

Babos’ favorite tennis player is Elena Dementieva. She idolized Elena while growing up. Babos liked Elean playing style and her friendly attitude towards junior.

Story Behind Her Nickname

As we all know, Babos is nicknamed “Babosdook.” Kristina Madenovic, doubles partner, was the one who gave her the name.

As for a reason, Kristian mentioned she is a big fan of horror movies, and her nickname is named in reference to the movie “The Babadook.”

Debut Season

In 2006. at the age of 13, Timea Babos started playing on ITF Junior Circuit. First, she won the title in the debut double event at the Grade 5 Talentum Cup in Hungary.

She also made her debut in single but was defeated in the second round of the tournament. 

Later she enjoyed success in doubles with Grade 5 Mostar Open in 2007. Followed by title in Grade 3 Budaors Cups and Grade 2 True Visions. 

Grade 1 debut

In her first Grade 1 event in 2008 at Barranquilla Junior Tennis Tournament Country Club, she reached finals in doubles and semis in the singles event.

Later in March, she won her first Grade 1 title at Mitsubishi-Lancer International Junior Championship. Likewise, she also made her first finals in a single during the same tournament.

In 2008 French Open Timea Babos made her junior Grand Slam debut. In both events, i.e., singles and doubles, she lost in the second round.

Later, in Wimbledon, she reached the quarterfinals in doubles but couldn’t pass the first round in singles.

Babos, at the age of 15, traveled to the United Kingdom for tennis practice because of a lack of proper facilities in the homeland. 

During the 2009 season, Babos started to make huge progress in grand slams and various Grade A events. In season beginning, she won titles in both singles and doubles at Copa Gatorade in January.

In the 2009 French Open, Babos competed in her first doubles Grand Slam finals but suffered defeat.

Grand Slam

Next, in the 2010 season, she started the year with Grade A Loy Yang Traralgon International title success in singles.

In August, Timea Babos represented Hungary in Youth Olympic Games, where they secured the third position in the doubles event.

Babos won her first Grand Slam in the French Open doubles partnering with Sloane Stephens. Later both pairs also got success in Wimbledon, followed by the US Open title.

Professional Debut 

During her professional debut in 2009, Timea Babos was just 15 years old and competing at ITF Junior Circuit.

In Babos’s debut ITF Women Circuit at Bourenmenoth Babos, she settled in the runner-up position. Later in just a few weeks, Babos clinched her first title in the UK’s 10k event.

In July 2010, Babos made her WTA debut in the Hungarian Ladies Open, entering as a wildcard. But only in the first round fell to Timea Bacsinszky. A year, she won four $25k events in Australia (2), the UK, and New Zealand.

In 2011 Timea Babos got her first WTA win with a victory over Anna-Guilia Remondina at Hungarian Ladies Open. Babos made her first Grand Slam appearance in US Open 2011.

However, she lost in the qualification match. At Challenger de Sa Saguenay, she won her first $50k singles and doubles events in October.

First WTA Title

In the first tournament of the 2012 season, Babos secured second place at the 2012 Blossom Cup held in Quanzhou.

Later in the 2012 Monterrey Open, she clinched her first WTA title defeating Alexader Cadantu. That triumph jumps her rank to 68 from 107, helping to make her first top 100 debuts.

Later in 2012, French Open Timea Babos made her Grand Slam debut in both singles and doubles. But lost in the first round of both events. In 2012 Wimbledon, she won her first Grand Slam victory with a win over Melaine Oudin.

In 2013 she showed huge progress in doubles. During the year, she won 4 tiles. They are Copa Colsanitas, Monterrey Open, Morocco Open, and Tashkent Open.

Grand Slam Finals Debut

In 2014 she struggled in singles but continued to make good progress in singles. Timea Babos made a good season start in doubles with victory in Sydney International.

Later in  2014, Wimbledon Babos reached her first Grand Slam doubles final with Miladenvoic. 

In 2015 Babos had a successful clay season. She won Morocco Open, followed by the Italian Open.

Later in late 2015, Babos and Miadenovic made their WTA finals but couldn’t overcome the round-robin group.

Highest Singles Career Ranking

After 2 years of disappointing results in singles in 2016, Babos started to gain her winning momentum.

In the first half of the season, Babos reached the quarterfinals in St.Petersburg Ladies Trophy and Katowice Open. Followed by semis in Morocco Open.

She also reached the round of 16 at the Miami Open, losing to Angelique Kerber. Later in the same event, Babos reached the finals in doubles but lost.

In July, Babos again reached the Wimbledon finals partnering with Shvedova. But they were defeated by the Williams sisters.

During the Italian Open second round, she defeated Venus Williams but couldn’t pass over Madison Keys in the next round. For the first time in Grand slam singles, Babos reached the third round at US Open.

But her journey ended with a loss to Simona Help. After that event, she went to 25 ranks, career highest.

WTA Finals Title

Timea Babos made a good start to the 2017 season, winning Hungarian Ladies Open defeating Lucie Safarova. Later she went to reach finals in the other three tournaments in singles. But she finished the season with a ranking of over 50. 

However, in doubles, she won her first WTA Finals Title. Babos partnered with Hlavackova to defeat Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larrson for the title.

First Grand Slam Success

In 2018 Babos and Kristina won their first grand slam at the Australian Open, defeating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. In the same event, she partnered with Rohan Bopanna reached the Mixed Doubles final. 

Later, she reached the quarterfinals at Italian Open and French Open. Then she won Birmingham Classic, followed by defeat in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. 

World Number 1

On July 16 Babos became world number 1 in doubles 

After becoming world number 1, Timea Babos became the first Hungarian tennis player to top world ranking. Later she reached the second grand slam final of the year at the US Open but lost. 

In the final event of the year, Babos won her back-to-back WTA Finals title partnering with Kristine.

Hattrick

In the 2019 season, Timea Bebos won Frech Open and later completed her journey to the quarterfinals at all four Grand Slam. 

In the same season, Babos, alongside Kristine, again won the WTA finals title. They won their all round-robin matches, followed by a win in semis and finals to clinch the title.

After the win, Babos completes the hat trick of WTF titles in doubles.

In 2020, Timea Babos started her season with the Australian Open, partnering with Kristine. Later they won the title defeating Barbora Strycova and Hsieh Su-Wei. 

In the first event after the COVID-19 pandemic, Babos and Kristine competed in US Open. But before the start of the second round, they were disqualified.

It was found out that Kristine contacted Benoit Paire (French Tennis player), who was tested COVID 19 positive.

However, in September, pair Bebos and Kristine successfully defended their French Open Title.
