Andy Bean was a former American professional golfer who participated in numerous golf tournaments representing the United States for over three decades. He became a pro in 1975 and played on the PGA and the Champions tours for several years.

Before his professional debut, he was a collegiate golfer for the Florida Gators, during which he won four amateur tournaments. 

Moreover, Andy won 11 PGA Tours and three PGA Tour Championships, aside from winning various competitions.

The University of Florida inducted him into their Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 1978. Additionally, he was entered into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame for his contribution to the game in 2000.

The late golfer was married to his wife, Debbie Bean, for over four decades until his death recently.

Though the pair never publicly revealed their first meeting, Debbie once told Sports Illustrated that Andy proposed to her first.

After knowing each other for a while, Andy asked her for marriage at the Atlanta Airport on April Fool’s Day.

She remembered that even though she wanted some time to think it over, he demanded her to decide immediately.

Eventually, the two tied the knot on August 30, 1978. At that time, it had just been around three years since his professional debut, and since then, Debbie supported her husband by showing up in tournaments that he participated in.

After their marriage, they had three daughters: Ashley, Lindsay, and Jordan. Besides, there is not much information about Debbie, except that she was a former airline stewardess.

Andy Bean Dies At Age 70

The eleven-time PGA Tour winner Andy Bean died at 70 on October 14, 2023, in Lakeland, Florida.

The veteran golfer reportedly died from health complications following a double lung transplant in September, as his lungs were damaged after contracting COVID-19.

Following his death, Golf Digest wrote, ” Andy was known for a famous story about “wrestling” an alligator at Q-school, a tale he clarified as simply swatting the creature’s tail when it got too close while playing alongside a fellow golfer who had never encountered a gator.”

Similarly, Golf Channel’s show host Ric Lerner tweeted, “Golf lost a good one. Andy Bean passed away at 70. Gentle giant, Bermuda grass specialist with 4 of his 11 Ws in FL. Gator legend. Condolences to wife Debbie, their three children and all the grandkids.”

His family is yet to announce the date of his funeral services.
