He is the older brother of Cody Williams and was born on April 14, 2001, making him three years older than Cody.

Williams played basketball at Perry High School and later played college basketball for the Santa Clara Broncos for three seasons.

Williams made his debut for Santa Clara, and throughout his collegiate career, he was twice chosen as an All-WCC player.

He also scored over 1,000 points as a junior, averaging 12.6 points on 46.9% shooting for his career.

Due to his excellent skills, William was twice an NBA Rookie of the Month and even named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Moreover, Williams became the second Thunder player to be named to the All-Rookie team and the fifth Thunder player to be named to an All-Rookie team overall.
