Aven Quintana is a 13-year-old football player from Texas who stole hearts long before anyone knew he had a heart condition.

Quintana from South Texas has always been known for two things: his huge smile and the way he plays football, as if every snap were his last.

The STX Gladiators 12U star seemed unstoppable until a routine check-up in October turned his world upside down.

Doctors discovered that Aven was born with a rare congenital defect called Anomalous Right Coronary Artery (ARCA).

In simple terms, the main artery that feeds blood to the right side of his heart grew in the wrong place.

When he ran hard or got excited during a game, that artery could get squeezed between the heart and the aorta, cutting off blood flow.

In the worst cases, it can cause sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes. For Aven, playing the sport he loved could have cost him his life.

The news crushed the tight-knit Quintana family.

Aven was born in November 2012 to parents Eric and Krystle Quintana, and he’s the proud big brother to his little sister Neva.

Football wasn’t just a game for him; it was everything, and stepping away from the field felt impossible, but open-heart surgery became the only safe choice.

The STX Gladiators family immediately rallied around their young leader.

They posted a heartfelt message titled “Heart of a Gladiator: Aven’s Story” and wrote:

“Once a Gladiator, always a Gladiator — STRONGER WITH EVERY BEAT.”

His dad Eric shared his pride on social media:

“My son is a warrior and i know god has bigger plans for this young man!!! This is a chapter in our lives that we are going through and we appreciate anything you can do to help us on the journey! Aven is in good spirits and is facing this challenge head on!!! I cant be prouder of this kid man those that have meet him know that he is amazing and again thank you all for the prayers and kind words. God is great and i know with him we can get through this!!”

Mom Krystle organized a massive BBQ plate fundraiser on October 18 at the Sparc League fields. Plates sold out fast, and the community showed up in a big way with donations, raffles, and special t-shirts.

Friends like Amanda Riley and Eli Charlien spread the word far and wide, reminding everyone that Aven had an entire army behind him.

The surgery happened just weeks later.

Doctors performed a delicate procedure called “unroofing” to move the misplaced artery into its correct position and restore blood flow to Aven’s heart.

Everyone held their breath.

Then came the update everyone had been praying for.

FOX San Antonio news anchor Ryan Wolf, who had followed Aven’s journey from the beginning, shared incredible news that the surgery was a complete success.

Just days later, doctors removed Aven’s chest tube, he was walking the halls, and he was already joking about his new “battle scar.” Doctors were stunned at how fast he was healing.

If everything kept going this well, he could leave the ICU the same day.

Ryan wrote,

“The boy who once feared his heart might stop on the football field… is now showing everyone just how strong that heart really is.”

Aven still can’t play tackle football again, at least not anytime soon, but his spirit is stronger than ever.

His parents say the love, prayers, and support from the South Texas community carried them through the scariest weeks of their lives.

Aven Quintana’s heart condition tested him in ways no 13-year-old should face, but it also proved what everyone already knew: this kid truly has the heart of a gladiator.
