Alabama: Basketball Coach Told a 7th–12th Grade Girls’ Team They Could Kiss Her Husband

Former educators and parents warn that such behavior cannot be dismissed as a joke or poor motivation.

A high school basketball coach has sparked widespread outrage after reportedly telling a girls’ basketball team—made up of students from 7th through 12th grade—that they could line up and kiss her husband if they won a game.

Parents, community members, and former educators have condemned the remark as deeply inappropriate, raising serious questions about professional boundaries, oversight, and accountability within the school.

The comment, shared publicly by Johnathan Lankford, the father of a 12th-grade player, immediately drew alarm.

Lankford described the situation as a complete failure of judgment, emphasizing that the statement went far beyond poor humor or misguided motivation.

He questioned how such a thought could pass through multiple layers of adult supervision without anyone intervening.

According to Lankford, the team included minors across a wide age range, making the remark especially troubling.

He expressed disbelief that an older female assistant coach, who should understand ethical and professional boundaries, did not speak up.

He also criticized the school administration for what he views as a lack of oversight and responsibility.

This isn’t about being too sensitive,” Lankford stated.

“This is about boundaries, professionalism, and basic common sense.”

He argued that the incident reflects a deeper problem in how some educators perceive their authority and responsibilities when working with children.

Community members echoed these concerns in a wave of reactions.

Hope Lankford, a former educator, described the comment as “beyond inappropriate and unprofessional,” adding that she would not feel comfortable allowing her child to be around adults who treat such behavior as a joke.

Others expressed disbelief and anger, with several commenters stating that the situation raised serious red flags about what might occur behind closed doors if such remarks were made openly.

Parents and residents also connected the incident to broader issues at the school.

Some pointed to high staff turnover, claiming the school lost nearly 20 teachers in the previous year.

They argued that incidents like this illustrate why confidence in leadership has eroded and why students ultimately suffer the consequences.

The controversy also prompted deeper discussions about the messages sent to young athletes.

Critics questioned what the comment teaches girls about consent, authority, and acceptable conduct from adults in positions of power.

Many stressed that educators must model appropriate behavior, particularly in environments where trust and mentorship play a critical role.

Lankford, who said the school had already lost his respect prior to this incident, described himself as both furious and heartbroken.

As a parent, he believes the situation demands clear answers and decisive action from school leadership and district officials.

As public reaction continues to grow, the incident has become more than a single comment.

For many in the community, it represents a broader failure of leadership and accountability.

Parents are now calling for transparency, investigation, and firm corrective measures to ensure that students remain in safe, professional learning environments.
