During a middle school basketball game in Harford County, Maryland, visiting Magnolia Middle School students were subjected to racist slurs and harassment at Bel Air Middle School, turning a fun event into a heartbreaking ordeal.

According to a heartfelt Facebook post by parent Deanna Gast, whose child was playing in the game, the harassment occurred while Magnolia students were seated in the cafeteria awaiting dismissal.

Students from the opposing school reportedly directed racist slurs, name-calling, and other forms of hostility toward them.

In her emotional message, Gast expressed deep sadness and disappointment, emphasizing that visiting students should always feel safe and respected at another school.

She wrote-:

“Our students should be able to visit another school and feel safe and respected, Instead, they were met with hostility and blatant disrespect.

She described the moment as heartbreaking, particularly when the principal, believed to be from Bel Air, addressed the issue at halftime, offering apologies and confirming that the behavior had been documented and was under investigation.

Gast praised her own school’s community for their composure and dignity in the face of adversity. She said:

“I am extremely proud of Magnolia Middle School—our students, parents, and team—for how they conducted themselves during such a difficult situation,”

Specifically applauding the Magnolia team parents for standing strong and showing class.

She contrasted this by stating that Bel Air should be ashamed of how its students handled the situation, adding that things could have escalated far worse if the roles were reversed.

Her post concluded with a powerful call to action:

“We have to do better by our kids. School sporting events should never feel hostile, and racism has absolutely no place in our schools. This behavior is unacceptable.”

She urged parents to hold children accountable, teach respect, and raise them right, ending with a reference to Harford County Public Schools to draw broader attention.

The Harford County incident quickly drew online reactions where many supported Gast and criticizing ongoing issues

One commenter, Lexnlay Mommie, highlighted perceived double standards:

“Edgewood, Joppatowne, and Aberdeen are always the ones to be made to look bad. Nothing will happen cause it’s the privileged schools doing wrong, but if it was one of the ‘bad schools,’ it wouldn’t have turned out much different. That’s terrible and kids should not have to deal with that.”

Another parent, Cory Ferrari Perrone, condemned the behavior outright:

“That’s beyond awful, I’m so sorry to hear this. The good news is, Bel Air doesn’t play when it comes to consequences, so those kids will likely end up suspended. Either way, unacceptable all around and ridiculous that this still happens.”

Elisha Ebert shared a more personal reflection:

“That’s one reason I would never want my kids to attend schools in that part of Harco. I’m so glad my kids have been raised differently. I’m so sorry you all had to endure that horrible experience.”

This episode underscores ongoing concerns about racism and bias in school environments, even in youth sports settings meant to foster teamwork and community.

While the district has acknowledged the incident through the principal’s response and ongoing investigation, many are calling for stronger measures to prevent such hostility and ensure all students feel truly safe and included during extracurricular activities.

Harford County Public Schools has not released further public details at this time, but the outpouring of support for the affected families highlights a shared demand for change.
