Allonzo Trier is an American professional basketball player who previously played in N.B.A. G League for the Iowa Wolves.

Trier went undrafted in the 2018 N.B.A. draft but was later selected by the New York Knicks.

During his time at Knicks as an undrafted rookie player, he made an unpredicted contribution to the struggling Knicks team.

Allonzo Trier | Early life and Family 

Allonzo Trier was born on Jan 17, 1996, in Seattle, USA. He was raised by single mom Marcie Trier who was a social worker. 

Trier’s mother was a gymnast and ballet dancer during her teens. Unfortunately, not much is not revealed when it comes to Trier’s father.

Nonetheless, Trier started playing basketball when he was seven years old. Trier used to play basketball with players older and more robust than him from a young age. 

In the eighth, Trier dropped out of his varsity team for being too good for his teammates.

Since his childhood, Trier has had a special bond and perfect sync with her mother. 

Without his mother, Allonzo would not be the player he is today. Trier’s mother has sacrificed a lot, and she deserves every respect.

Marcie encouraged and supported him with everything to fulfill his dream of being a basketball player. She attended all of his basketball games and training since his childhood.

Training Routine

After working early shifts, Marcie used to get home for Trier training sessions. Marcie used to rebound and tally the shots Trier scored.

In the gym, Trier made 500 shots every day from different spots starting from short to midrange, then finally 3-point line.

When Trier misses two shots in a row during training, she then will deduct one point from the total. After that, Marcie would drive Trier to another gym nearby.

Trier practiced with the local high school for a one-hour workout like ball-handling, shooting, and energetic one-on-one basketball.

Trier used to follow these workouts twice a week. Later, they would drive the downtown Seattle team with other A.A.U. Teams for about 2 hours.

First and Second Year

After Athletes First offered him a program, Trier and his mom moved to Oklahoma.

There Trier attended Oklahoma City Storm, the sports-based organization serving homeschool and athletics in Oklahoma City, for his first year.

His offensive dominance helped Storm top public schools in the area. Later Trier became the first Storm player to total more than 1000 in the first year.

But in August 2012, Trier requested a transfer to NOAH, another home school based in Tusla.

However, Allonzo’s transfer was rejected by National Christian Home School Championship Eligibility Advisory Board.

They voted 23-4 as they mentioned to study at home school, Trier must live with his parents or local guardian.

But unexpectedly, his mom moved to Tusla to make her son eligible. Then Trier started his classes at Cornerstone Tutorial Centre.

Alonzo scored 64 points in an O.T. win against Bartlesville in the same year before Christmas day.

After six, her mother moved back to Oklahoma City, and Trier started to look for a new high school. 

Junior and Senior Year

Trier decided to join Montrose Christian, which produced N.B.A. players like 2014 NBA MVP Kevin Durant, Greivis Vasquez, and many more.

Under Bryan Bartley, Trier flourished his game averaging 24.6 PPG, 4.0 RPG, and 2.8 APG.

Similarly, Allonzo helped Montrose win Christian Schools Athletic Association Division I championship with an overall 20-5.

Allonzo was also named Maryland 2014 Gatorade state player of the year.

Trier’s mother complained that the school mishandled his academic schedule and played for the team; Trier was told to cut his dreadlock.

In his senior year, every best A.A.U. Teams across districts wanted to lock him in their team for the summer Nike Elite Youth Basketball League.

Also, the news of Trier opening for a new high school team spread. For the league, Allonzo decided to play for his Athletes First, Trier’s original A.A.U. Team.

Then in June, Trier decided to transfer to Findlay Prep for the final year. In his last year, Trier posted 26.6 PPG 5.4 RPG at Findlay. 

2015 MC Donalds All American

Trier was selected in the 2015 MC Donald All American game as a high profiled player.

The athlete was on the West team, including today’s N.B.A. players like Brandon Ingram and PJ Dozier.

Trier scored a team-high 17 points in the match but could not defeat West, who was led by Cheick Diallo with 18 points. 

2015 Jordan Brand Classic

Later Trier was also invited to the 14th  Jordan Brand Classic and scored 28 points later, being awarded co- M.V.P. Trier helped the team to a 118-116 win over East. 

College Decision

Allonzo Trier was ranked a 5-star recruit by ESPN 247 sports in the class of 2015. Trier had offers from 18 colleges over the country like UCLA, and Kansas Memphis, among others.

Trier had a good relationship with his former USA U-19 & Arizona head coach Sean Miller.

After making an official visit to Arizona, Trier and his mother decided to play for Arizona Wildcats.

Allonzo Trier | College Career

Freshman Year

Allonzo made his debut for the Arizona Wildcats in an exhibition game victory over Chico State. In his debut, he contributed 13 points along with six rebounds and three assists. 

On December 10, 2015, Trier, in an 85-72 win against Fresno State, scored his season-high 27 points.

During Pac- the 12 regular seasons, on January 9, 2016, Trier broke his shooting hand in a 101-103 loss over U.S.C., scoring 25 points.

Trier was out for about a month before making his return against Washington on February 6, 2016. After returning from injury, Trier scored 7 points helping his team 77-72 win.

Further, in the NCAA tournament, Allonzo played his final game as a freshman and scored 10 points. Overall in freshman year for Arizona Wildcats, Allonzo had 14.8 PPG. 

On April 4, 2016, after discussing with his parents and coach, Trier decided to return to Arizona Wildcats for his sophomore year.

Sophomore Year

Positive Drug Test

NCAA suspended Trier after conducting random drug tests in October. He was accused of being positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs (P.E.D.).

But later, it was found out that Trier had a car accident in the summer and was given a drug without his knowledge.

Trier later appealed and was allowed to return after NCAA checked his medical documents. 

Return to Basketball

On January 21, 2017, Trier made his first appearance after 19 games against UCLA. In his return, he posted 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists to help Arizona beat UCLA 96-85.  

Trier had an outstanding sophomore year leading a team in scoring with 17.2 PPG. He also won the 2016-17 Pac-12 Tournament and was a most outstanding player.

Junior Year

Trier Trier made a good start to his junior year scoring 20+ points in 5 consecutive games since the season-opening. On November 10, 2017, Trier scored his career-high 32 points in a win over Northern Arizona. 

Second Positive Drug Test

On February 22, 2018, Trier was again tested positive for the use of P.E.D. by NCCA. Then Trier was considered ineligible to play.

Later Arizona appealed, mentioning it was remaining from the previous year. Further, Trier won the appeal and returned to play against Standford.

During the game, he scored 18 points to help Arizona win by 75-67. In 2018 also, Trier won Pac 12 Tournament 2018.

In the final, he played 35 minutes, scoring 9 points and grabbing four rebounds to get past U.S.C. 75-61. 

After Arizona’s loss to Buffalo Bulls in sweet-16 of the 2018 NCAA Men’s tournament, Trier decided to forgo his senior college year and declared for the N.B.A. draft (2018).

In Trier’s final season for Arizona Wildcats, he posted 18.1 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 3.2 APG.

2018 Draft Night 

It was quite shocking after the Arizona guard went undrafted during the 2018 N.B.A. draft night. Trier believes that two positive P.E.D. Tests in his college career may have affected his resume. 

Rookie Season 

However, later Trier signed a two-way contract with N.Y. Knicks. Then he played for the Knicks in Las Vegas 2018 Summer League.

Trier made the strong point as an undrafted rookie, scoring an average of 17 points, six rebounds, and three assists over three games in Las Vegas.

Trier made a hot start to his Knicks career. On October 17, 2018, he posted 15 points, four rebounds, and two blocks in a 126-107 win against Atlanta Hawks during his N.B.A. debut.

Later on November 23, in a win over New Orleans Pelicans, Trier scored career-high 25 points. 

During Knicks’ loss to Detroit Pistons on November 27, Trier posted his first career double-double (24 points and ten rebounds).

Without spending a single day in the G league, Trier was awarded two year deal of $7 million on December 13, 2018, for his performance.  

Allonzo signed the richest contract ever by a two-way player. On January 23, 2019, Trier set a new high score scoring 32 points but fell to Houston Rockets by 114-110.

Trier maintained his outstanding scoring record, scoring 13 P.P.G. over the next 22 games later. During his first season as Knicks, Allonzo finished 9th among rookies to score with 10.8 PPG.

2019/20 season

Alonzo’s second season as a Knicks thing didn’t go according to plan. The arrival of rookie RJ Barrett replaced him as a top perimeter scorer.

In his first game against the Spurs, Trier didn’t score a single point. In the second game, only Trier lost his starting place to Elfried Payton.

But coming off the bench, he scored 22 points in a loss against the Kyrie-led Nets. By mid of November, Allozno fell out to reserve a role for team rotation.

Although Trier had some decent games due to the Knicks’ deep line of shooting guards, he could not get quality playing minutes.

On June 26, 2020, Knicks waived Trier to make room for Theo Pinson. Trier was released for a player who had played few games and averaged fewer points than him.

Overall in 12.1 minutes per game, Trier recorded 6.5 PPG with 1.2 APG and RPG.

New Journey Awaits

After being released by the Knicks, Trier signed a Standard Player Contract with N.B.A. G League agreeing to be part of the Draft held on January 11, 2021.

Iowa Wolves selected him with the 4th overall pick on draft night. Trier will now travel to the Disney bubble in February to play G league.

This is the best opportunity to earn his spot back in the N.B.A., where Trier tasted a little bit of success before.

National Team

Allonzo Trier has also represented the U.S.A. National team. Firstly, Trier played in FIBA U-18 Americas Championship 2014.

Overall, Trier scored 12.6 PPG to help the U.S.A. win the championship. Later in 2015, Allonzo represented the U.S.A. in FIBA U-19 World Championship 2015 Greece.

In the final match against Croatia, Trier scored 7 points and helped to secure victory.
