Born on February 8, 1970, in Chesapeake, Virginia, Mourning attended Indian River High School, where he excelled in basketball.

After a college basketball career at Georgetown University, he was selected by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1992 NBA draft.

Eventually, he was selected second overall by the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the 2019 NBA G League draft.

Trey Mourning Draws Inspiration From His Father

Trey comes from a rich basketball pedigree, growing up surrounded by the electrifying aura of professional basketball.

As a result, he absorbed the essence of the sport at an early age from his father, Alonzo Mourning.

As the son of an NBA Hall of Famer, Trey recognizes his father’s impact on shaping his basketball journey.

In a 2022 interview, Trey revealed,

“My dad is one of the main inspirations why I play basketball. He’s been a big impact on my game to this day.”

Although the former Skyforce player goes by “Trey,” he shares the same name as his father, Alonzo Mourning III.

Despite his father’s legendary status, Trey sees Alonzo as “just dad.”

Growing up in Miami, he spent much of his childhood at the Heat’s American Airlines Arena.

Thus, Trey was immersed in the world of the Miami Heat, bonding with his father and the team.

Alonzo and Trey played the center position, although Trey’s style differs from his father’s.

At 2.06 m and 100 kg, Trey may not mirror his father’s imposing presence, but he shares the same passion for the game.

Despite the physical disparities, Trey acknowledges his father has a profound influence on his game. Further, he values the lessons learned beyond the basketball court.

Maintaining a solid bond, Alonzo and Trey communicate regularly, with Alonzo providing guidance on basketball matters and life.

In addition, Trey’s decision to wear his father’s iconic No. 33 reflects his deep connection and respect for Alonzo’s legacy.

Trey’s journey is not just about basketball; it’s about honoring a family legacy while crafting his narrative.
