Walter Eugene Lewis, an avid golfer, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Friday, November 28, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
His greatest joy was coaching his sons’ baseball teams.
Walter Eugene Lewis lived a meaningful life built on service, skill, and the love of his family.
He was a proud veteran who served his country as a Military Police officer in the United States Army, stationed in Germany.
After his military service, he returned home to build a long and respected career as a lineman with AT&T, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a man of varied passions and found joy in his free time.
An avid golfer, Walter cherished the camaraderie of the course with friends. He was also a skilled woodworker, whose creations reflected his patience and keen eye for detail.
His greatest joy was found on the baseball diamond, and he took great pride in coaching his sons’ teams. It was an opportunity for him to teach his boys about teamwork, respect, and perseverance.

Walter Eugene Lewis to be Interred at State Veterans Cemetery
Walter Eugene Lewis, the son of Lonnie Max and Ruby Bruce Lewis, was born on October 9, 1942, in Wayne County.
He passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Walter was a man of deep faith and humility.
He was a devoted member of New Hope Church, where he found great comfort and community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Judy Lewis. His legacy of love continues through his three sons and their wives, Robert and Stephanie Lewis, Jeff and Jennifer Lewis, and Eric and Jennifer Lewis.
He was a cherished grandfather to Camden, Kira, Dax, Braxton, Austin, Annslea, Jackson, Hunter, and Connor. Moreover, two nieces also survive him.
In addition to his parents, his brothers, John Lewis and Dennis Lewis, preceded him in death.
The Lewis family will hold a service to celebrate Walter’s life at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at New Hope Church with Pastor Steve Wellman officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the church before the service. Later, the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery will host an interment.
All the arrangements have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
