Brandon Paul: Early Life and Family

The basketball player Brandon Stephan Paul was born on April 30, 1991, in Gurnee, Illinois. His father’s name is Cliff Sr., and his mother’s name is Lynda Paul. 

Lynda, Paul’s mother, played college basketball for Ball State University and coached the Illinois Hoopstars, Paul’s AAU basketball team.

Similarly, Cliff Sr., Paul’s father, is a police officer and a 13-year veteran of the United States Navy. Cliff Sr. was stationed in Spain for six months following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The player also has two brothers, Cliff Jr. and Darius Paul. Darius played one season for Western Michigan before transferring to Illinois as a redshirt sophomore for the 2013-14 season.

Brandon was named Illinois Mr. Basketball for 2009 following his senior season, narrowly defeating future University of Illinois teammate Jereme Richmond.

Brandon Paul: College Career

Paul was pivotal to the University of Illinois during the 2009-10 season. As a sophomore, the player appeared in all 34 games for the 2010-11 Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team.

Brandon earned the role of full-time starter for the 2011-12 season during his junior year.

Brandon Paul: Injuries and Setbacks

The player faced many setbacks at the beginning of his career. Firstly, the player went undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft. Following that, Brandon joined the Timberwolves for the 2013 NBA Summer League. 

On August 10, 2013, the player agreed to terms with Russian club Nizhny Novgorod for the 2013-14 season. However, he left Russia in early February 2014 after encountering racism and a difficult language barrier.

Brandon returned home after appearing in only 12 games and averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.5 steals in 13.8 minutes per game.

On February 27, 2014, Brandon was acquired by the NBA Development League’s Canton Charge. However, he suffered a season-ending injury. As a result, he waived the Charge on March 14, 2014. 

The Canton Charge re-acquired Paul on November 2, 2014. However, due to an injury, the player was placed on the inactive list for the remainder of the season on April 4, 2015, and was waived two days later.

Professional Basketball Career

Brandon signed with the Spanish club FIATC Joventut on September 14, 2015. He started 25 of the team’s 33 games and averaged 13 points per game. 

After playing for a year with the Joventut, Brandon signed with the 76ers on July 25, 2016. Before that, the player had also played for the Charlotte Hornets and the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2016 NBA Summer League.

However, he was waived on October 24 after appearing in four preseason games. On December 13, 2016, Brandon signed a contract extension with Turkish club Anadolu Efes for the remainder of the 2016-17 season. 

The player participated in the 2017 NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks in Orlando and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Las Vegas in July 2017. 

Likewise, he signed with the San Antonio Spurs on July 14, 2017. On October 18, 2017, Brandon made his NBA debut, coming off the bench in a 107-99 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Spurs waived Brandon on July 31, 2018.

“I’m a professional first, but I’m never going for another man who tries to spit in my face. I kept my mouth shut for three years on this coward,” Brandon wrote without mentioning Baldwin.

The player added, “Ask anyone about his character, and they’ll tell you. Ask any person on 2019-20 Olympiacos; they’ll tell you in a heartbeat. I bet my salary on it. I still hate how they did my brother Will Cherry when Wade tried him too; ask anyone about that.”
