Pre Hawaii Career

Colt originally spent a year at the University of Colorado as a redshirt. However, he was kicked off from the team. It was because a female CU student accused him of entering the dorm without consent, exposing himself and fondling her. He was intoxicated at the time, so he was arrested and convicted of felony burglary and trespassing charges. However, a lack of evidence made him innocent of unlawful sexual contact. He even passed the polygraph test about the incident. He showed those results and transferred to Saddleback College in California in 2004.

Colt helped lead Saddleback College to a Conference Championship. In that season, he was named honorable mention JUCO All-America, state offensive player of the year by the JuCal Transfer, and first-team all-conference for his performance. He repaired his image well to get offers from the University of Hawaii and San Jose State University. He wanted to put some distance between himself and his past problems, and so he accepted the offer from the University of Hawaii head coach June Jones.

University of Hawaii

In 2005, Colt joined the University of Hawaii and was the quarterback of the football team. He played in 10 out of 12 games; the only games he did not appear in were against USC and San Diego State. His first season with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors was successful as he either tied or broke eleven school offensive records.

His total offense yards were 4455, and touchdowns thrown were 35. In Western Athletic Conference (WAC) history, his yard passing of 4301 yards is the eighth-most. He achieved career-high numbers in passing yards (515), touchdowns (7), and pass completions (38) during a game against New Mexico State University on 15 October. He also had nine 300+ yard performances on the season, including four 400+ yard games and a 515-yard performance.

2006

Colt was voted the WAC’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year. He finished the regular season with a 182.8 rating and completed 72.15% of his passes, the best in Division I-A. He passed for 53 touchdowns, just one touchdown shy from breaking the NCAA Division I-A single-season record. On 24 December 2006 at the Hawaii Bowl, the team finished the season 11-3, finishing second in the WAC behind Boise State.
