Who is Connor McDavid?

McDavid, dubbed the next Crosby, is a Canadian professional ice hockey center. In addition, he is also the captain of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League(NHL).

Many members and colleagues of the news media consider him to be the best player on the planet. He’s been nicknamed ‘The Next One’ after being compared to Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Sidney Crosby.

Since he was a child, Connor has played the game frequently with children considerably older than him.

In addition, McDavid also became the third player in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), following Aaron Ekblad and John Tavares, to be allowed to play one year earlier than the permissible maximum.

For his team, the Erie Otters, he received various trophies and accolades. Later McDavid was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Despite being out for most of his early professional career due to injuries, he continued to develop consistently and led his team to the playoffs last season. He also helped his country, Canada, win three gold medals.

Early Life & Childhood

Brian and Kelly McDavid gave birth to Connor McDavid on January 13, 1997, in Richmond Hill, Ontario. His father coached youth hockey players, and he has an elder brother, Cameron, who graduated from Ivey Business School.

The Canadian-born began skating at the age of three and started playing hockey with bigger youngsters at four.

However, his hometown hockey organization banned him from playing with older children when he was six years old.

So his parents registered him in a team in Aurora, which allowed him to play with 9-year-olds. His father then coached him at the York-Simcoe Express, an Aurora, Ontario team that won four Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships.

While at Boston University, McDavid considered playing for the Terriers but instead chose to play in the OHL to further his development.

Early Career

Connor McDavid began his hockey career with the York-Simcoe Express of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). Later he moved on to the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL).

There he played bantam and minor midget hockey. During the 2011-12 season, he was given the GTHL “Player of the Year” after scoring 209 points in 88 games with 130 assists and 79 goals.

Hockey Canada granted him Exceptional Player designation as a result of his exceptional level of play. It allowed him to enter the 2012 OHL Priority Selection at 15, a year earlier than Connor would have otherwise been eligible.

At the age of 15, McDavid entered the 2012 OHL Priority Selection. Moreover, he was selected first overall by the Erie Otters, earning him the ‘Jack Ferguson Award.’

Furthermore, his outstanding play earned him a spot on the ‘OHL First All-Rookie Team’ and a berth as a finalist for the ‘CHL Rookie of the Year.’

Professional Career

Connor McDavid’s professional career got off to a shaky start, as he lost his first two games against the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues. Then, unfortunately, he also shattered his clavicle, forcing him to miss 37 games.

On February 2, 2016, McDavid made his return to the ice memorable with a goal and two assists against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Moreover, he recorded his first five-point night against his hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

McDavid was voted third for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ despite only 45 games that season. After being Captain of the Oilers on October 5, 2016, at the age of 19 years, McDavid became the NHL’s youngest captain.

On July 5, 2017, McDavid agreed to a $100 million eight-year extension with the Edmonton Oilers, making him the highest-paid player in NHL history.

Awards & Achievements

Connor McDavid led the Canadian team to capture three gold medals at the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championship, the 2015 World U20 Championship, and the 2016 World Hockey Championship.

During the 2016-17 season, he also assisted his club side, the Edmonton Oilers, in reaching the playoffs and finishing second.

In the 2013-17 season, he was the team’s leading scorer and was awarded the ‘Most Valuable Player,’ winning the ‘Hart Memorial Trophy.’ Additionally, he became the fourth-fastest active player to earn 100 points after 92 games.

Later he took home the Ted Lindsay Award three times as the finest player selected by fellow NHL players.

In addition, McDavid joins Wayne Gretzky as the only two unanimous Hart Trophy winners in NHL history.

Injury

The Edmonton Oilers’ superstar had fully recovered from a severe knee injury sustained when he collided with the goalpost in the season’s final game of the 2018-19 season.

This is even more unbelievable because McDavid appears to be in more excellent shape than ever before.

McDavid has suffered three significant injuries since 2014, including a fractured bone in his right hand, a broken left clavicle, a torn PCL, and a break in his left knee’s front tibia.

But he’s always been able to recover faster than expected and return to his previous level of play. McDavid injured his right hand in a brawl during his last OHL season in 2014-15 when he missed his target and smacked the glass.

He broke his collarbone less than a year later after being slammed into the end boards in full flight by Philadelphia Flyers defender Brandon Manning.

Another distinguishing aspect or lack thereof is the absence of any hockey memorabilia. McDavid, according to Kyle, dislikes displaying his stuff.

The home includes a basketball court, an extensive wine bar, and a variety of opulent furnishings. Something about the mansion makes it feel like it could be Darth Vader’s home, which suits McDavid just fine.
