Dewayne Dedmon | Early life, Childhood & Family

Dewayne Dedmon grew up in Antelope Valley, north of Los Angeles. He was raised by a single mother with his two sisters. His father committed suicide when Dedmon was young.

His mother is Gail Lewis. She had raised three kids by herself, but she didn’t want her children to be into sports.

Gail Lewis believed in the Bible, which proclaims, “you can only serve one master, and if you are already serving God, it’s harder to serve a team, and it’s not fair to be the part of something else.” That’s why she prohibited her athletic son Dewayne from playing any sports when he was young.

Dewayne played all the sports but not with the team. After turning 18, he came to his mother and confessed his interest in playing basketball. Dedmon finally had the opportunity.

But the problem was he did not know how to play basketball. He introduced himself to the head coach at Antelope Valley College. His basketball career started right then.

College Career

Dewayne Dedmon attended Lancaster High School. He was tall and robust with an athletic physique but didn’t play any sports until adulthood. It was because of his mother’s religious disapproval.

When he turned 18, he was a grown man. He was 6 ft 8 in, which was the perfect height for sports.

After completing high school, Dedmon attended Antelope Valley College.

In 2009- 2010, Dedmon helped Marauders to amass 17-14 records as a freshman at Antelope Valley College. He averaged 6.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. 

On January 22, 2010, he had 46 blocks and tied a school record with seven blocks. It was against the Chaffey College.

Subsequently, he underwent a broken bone on his forehead while playing against Victor Valley. He got an injured nasal cavity. He was poorly struck with an errant elbow. Due to the severe injury, he had to miss the final seven regular-season games.

He made his comeback for the playoffs. He attended to record 5 points and 13 rebounds in his first returned game. It was a great win against Miramar College.

The University of South California (USC)

Dedmon signed with USC on April 14, 2010. He only began his practice with USC in 2010-2011 due to the NCAA transfer regulations. After he transferred from Antelope Valley College, he started his new practice.

In 2011-2012, Dedmon averaged 7.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in 20 games for USC. During that time, he had to tackle numerous injuries; still, he managed to score. 

In January 2012, he had a season-high 18 points against Oregon. On January 21, he averaged eight points and eight rebounds against Oregon State.

Moreover, he endured a torn left MCL. He was playing against Colorado. 

In 2012-2013, Dedmon took the Trojans with an average of 6.7 points and 7.6 rebounds as a junior for USC. 

On March 6, he scored a career-high of 18 points against Washington. Then, he was suspended for the inconvenience incident in downtown Spokane. It was between USC players and Local bar patrons. 

After rejoining, Trojans end the season with a 14-18 record. Dedmon averaged 2.1 blocks per game.

In 2012-2013, he completed the ninth season in the program record with 85 career blocks. 

Dedmon announced the NBA draft, abstaining from his final year of eligibility on April 24, 2013.

Professional Career

Golden State Warriors

Dedmon came to the Miami Heat for the Orlando Summer League and the Dallas Mavericks. He joined the club for the Las Vegas Summer League. Therefore, he came to Miami Heat after getting undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft. 

He signed Golden State Warriors on September 23, 2013. After his appearance in five preseason games, he was waived by Golden State Warriors.

Later on November 1, he was accepted as an affiliate player of the Golden State Warriors. He was approved by the Santa Cruz Warriors of the NBA Development League. 

Again he was recalled by Golden State Warriors on November 20. He was reassigned with the club on November 24.

The player appeared in just four games for the team. Then, on Dec 5, he was waived by Golden State Warriors. Dedmon was again re-accepted by Santa Cruz Warriors.

Philadelphia 76ers

Dedmon signed 10 days contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on January 14, 2014. He made his debut after signing. He recorded 2 blocks and 7 rebounds in 14 minutes of action. Dedmon led to a 95-92 win over the Charlotte Bobcats.

Then he once again signed the second 10-day contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. After the end of the agreement, the club decided not to sign him for the remainder of the season. 

Dewayne has been named the Futures All-Star roster for the 2014 NBA D-League ALL-Star Game.

Orlando Magic

Dedmon signed a 10-day agreement with the Orlando Magic on February 25, 2014.

On March 7, he resigned from a second 10-day contract with Orlando Magic. Then, he signed a multi-year contract with Magic on March 17.

The athlete participated in Orlando Magic for the 2014 NBA Summer League in July 2014. He finished up his first season with Magic. He had a season-best tournament with 11 points and 16 rebounds. It was a 103-98 win over Boston Celtics.

After that, Dedmon recorded a career-high 12 points in November 2015. It was a 105-97 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. 

He was assigned to the Erie BayHawks on March 5, 2016. It was the Orlando Magic D-League-affiliate team. The Orlando Magic again recalled him after two days of taking off. 

He scored a career-high 18 points and season-high rebounds on March 26, 2016, which he did in 22 minutes as a starter. It was a clear 111-89 win over the Chicago Bulls.

San Antonio Spurs

Dedmon signed with San Antonio Spurs in July 2016. He recorded two points, eight rebounds, two blocks in a first debut for the Spurs.

It was a fair 129-100 win over the Golden State Warriors. 

Dedmon averaged 17 points and 17 rebounds, accomplishing a high season in February 2017. He assisted the Spurs to a 103-92 win over the Detroit Pistons

Atlanta Hawks

Dedmon signed with the Atlanta Hawks on July 21, 2017. He scored a career-high 20 points and 14 rebounds on November 15, 2017. It was a 126-80 win over Sacramento Kings.

He was ruled out for three-to-six weeks after the left tibia stress reaction. Then on January 8, he made his comeback against Los Angeles Clippers.

Dedmon scored career-high with 20 points and 13 rebounds in February 2018. It was a clear 118 -115 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Later again, he scored 15 points and 18 rebounds in a 99-94 win against Utah Jazz. After all, he was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a left ankle injury on March 31.

Sacramento Kings

Sacramento Kings signed Dewayne Dedmon to a three-year agreement on July 8, 2019. He was signed for a $40 million contract. Therefore, he experienced less playing time in the club. It’s because Harry Giles and Sichuan Holmes are formerly of him in the rotation.

He requested his trade for this reason in front of the public. Later, he was fined $50,000 by the NBA for requesting trade publicly.


Dedmon was once again traded back to Atlanta on February 6, 2020. He was exchanged for Alex Len and Jabari Parker

Then again, Dedmon was traded to the Detroit Pistons. He was traded in exchange for Khyri Thomas and Tony Snell. Unfortunately, he was waived just after four days.

Miami Heat

After all the rotation, Dedmon signed with the Miami Heat on April 8, 2021. On August 6, 2021, he re-signed to the Miami Heat on a one-year minimum deal.
