High School Career

Giles went to High Point, North Carolina’s Wesleyan Christian Academy. After leading Wesleyan Christian to a 2013 NCISAA 3A State Championship with New York Knicks shooting guard Theo Pinson, Giles averaged 12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. However, he had a left knee injury and missed his sophomore season.

Giles was named first-team All-USA by USA Today after his junior season. Giles joined his AAU team, CP3 All-Stars, in the summer of 2015, sponsored by fellow Winston-Salem native and NBA superstar Chris Paul of the Phoenix Suns.

In 16 games on the EYBL circuit, Giles scored 18.2 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, earning him first-team All-EYBL accolades. In addition, Giles was named to Slam Magazine’s Summer All-American Team in August 2015.

Before his senior year, Giles elected to enroll and play for the high school basketball powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. He was considered the finest high school prospect in the 2016 class and a five-star recruit.

ESPN ranked Giles as the No. 1 overall recruit and No. 1 power forward in the 2016 high school class, while Scout.com and Rivals ranked him as the No. 2 overall recruit and No. 2 power ahead.

College Career

Giles was elected to the Naismith and John R. Wooden Award preseason watchlists before the 2016–17 season and ranked third in the ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year voting.

On October 3, 2016, officials revealed that Giles would be out for up to six weeks for knee surgery. Giles made his collegiate debut against Tennessee State on December 19, 2016.

In a victory over Georgia Tech on January 4, 2017, he had his first double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Professional Career

The Portland Trail Blazers picked Giles with the 20th overall choice in the 2017 NBA Draft on June 22, 2017.

On Draft night, his rights were moved to the Sacramento Kings. As a result, Giles would miss the entirety of the 2017 NBA Summer League. Giles signed a rookie scale deal with the Kings on July 8, 2017, for $10,621,750.

Giles was openly declared out from action on October 6, 2017. On January 18, 2018, Giles was out from NBA gameplay during the 2017–18 season because of Still; he focused on more vigorous practice activities and individual workouts to develop strength. 

Rookie Year

On May 14, 2018, the Sacramento Bee revealed that Giles would play in the California Classic Summer League in Sacramento on July 2, 3, and 5. For the 2018 NBA Summer League, Giles joined the Kings.

There were positive signs for Giles and the Kings before the 2018–19 season, with Giles being considered a potential rookie of the year candidate. On October 17, 2018, Giles made his NBA debut, scoring two points in a 123–117 season-opening loss to the Utah Jazz.

Giles was assigned to the Stockton Kings, the Kings’ G-League club, on November 10, 2018, and recorded 30 points in his first game with the team.

The Kings recalled Giles on November 11, 2018. Giles recorded 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in a 104–99 win over the San Antonio Spurs on November 12, 2018.

Second-year

The Kings rejected Giles’ $4 million option for the 2020–21 season on October 31, 2019. Giles found himself outside the Kings’ big man rotation when the Kings acquired free agents Dewayne Dedmon and Richaun Holmes in the offseason.

He missed out on a month of games from November 30 to December 28. However, due to injuries to Holmes and previous No. 2 selection Marvin Bagley and the team’s trade of Dedmon to the Atlanta Hawks, Giles was thrust into the starting lineup against the Miami Heat on February 7, 2020.

On February 27, 2020, Giles recorded 19 points in Sacramento’s against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 112–108 loss. From a week in February, Giles recorded double digits in four straight games.

Giles joined the Portland Trail Blazers on November 22, 2020. He made 12 points and 2 rebounds against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 133–85 win on April 4, 2021.

Giles entered a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers on September 27, 2021. However, he was released on October 16, 2021, and joined the Agua Caliente Clippers as an affiliate player on October 27.

National Team Career

Giles represented the USA at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Greece in 2015. He was third in points per game, second in an offensive rebound, and first in a defensive rebound in the competition. He was selected to the tournament’s All-Tournament Team.
