Theodore Ernest Els, commonly known as Ernie Els, is a renowned professional golfer from South Africa. He has left an indelible mark on the world of golf through his exceptional skills, accomplishments, and philanthropic endeavors.

Els turned professional in 1989. He won his first pro tournament in 1991 on the Southern Africa Tour. His first major victory came in 1994 when he triumphed at the U.S. Open. Els followed this up with another U.S. Open victory in 1997.

In 2002, Els won at the Heineken Classic at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Then, he traveled to America and defeated  Tiger Woods and won the Genuity Championship title.

Ernie debuted on the PGA Tour Champions in January 2020, shortly after turning 50. He continued to impact the PGA Tour Champions, and in March 2020, he secured his first victory on tour at the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California.

Liezl is the secretary and managing director of the Ernie Els Foundation, which aims to raise awareness and support children with autism.

Ernie and his wife, Liezl, have two children together. Their daughter’s name is Samantha, and their son’s name is Ben.  

Liezl Els has been a constant pillar of support for Ernie throughout his golfing career and has played an integral role in their philanthropic endeavors.

Ernie Els’s Son Is Autistic

In 2008, Ernie Els began putting an “Autism Speaks” symbol on his golf bag. Afterward, he revealed that his son, who was five years old at the time, had autism.

Els and his wife established the Ernie Els Foundation, which aims to support and assist children with autism. This cause is close to Els’ heart as his son, Ben, was diagnosed with autism.

The Els for Autism Foundation was established in 2009 to collect money and create knowledge about Autism. The foundation wants to collect $30 million to build a modern place for studying and treating autism. 

In 2010, Liezl and Samantha climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, to raise money for the foundation.
