In 2010, the 30 years old running back enrolled at North Carolina University at Chapel Hill and began to play for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team.

NFL Draft and Contract
On December 14, 2012, Bernard had announced that he was entering the 2013 NFL Draft.

Bernard started the rookie season as a back-up to veteran Benjarvus Green-Ellis for the Cincinnati team and started transitioning to a change-of-pace back throughout the whole season.
