Iam Tongi, an 18-year-old standout who recently graduated from Decatur High School in Federal Way and won the Season 21 of the American Idol, sang the national anthem before the Home Run Derby.
Iam, aka William “Iam” Guy Tongi, is an extraordinary individual who has shattered barriers and made history.
Hailing from Hawaii, I proudly became the first Pacific Islander to claim victory in three years on the renowned American Idol competition.
Notably, I also broke the mold as the first non-country singer to achieve this remarkable feat.

Iam Tongi Early Life
Tongi, a proud native of Kahuku, Hawaii, situated on the island of Oahu, embarked on a transformative journey that led him to Federal Way, Washington, where his family relocated in 2020.
He pursued his education at Decatur High School.
With a rich multicultural heritage, Tongi proudly represents his Tongan, Samoan, and Irish roots, adding a unique blend of cultural richness to his artistic expression.
His affiliation with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints further shapes his character and values, serving as a guiding force in his life.
As the youngest of five siblings, Tongi discovered his passion for music at an early age. In fifth grade, he eagerly embraced the ukulele, skillfully strumming its strings, and later honed his talent on the piano.
Post Idol
In the wake of his resounding victory on Idol, Tongi embarked on a tour, providing him with an opportunity to reunite with his dear friend and fellow contestant, Oliver Steele, who had impressed audiences with a Top 8 finish.
Their profound connection, forged during the intense competition, was celebrated as they embarked on this joint musical journey.
A heartwarming gesture from a talented Hawaii-based ukulele maker added to the significance of their bond, as Tongi and Steele were presented with custom-made, matching ukuleles, symbolizing their enduring friendship.
On an evening, July 1st, Tongi astounded the audience with an unexpected surprise.
He welcomed Roman De Peralta, a gifted musician from Kolohe Kai, to join him on stage for a soul-stirring rendition of “Cool Down” – the very song that had captivated hearts during his time on Idol.
He also sang the national anthem before the Home Run Derby on July 10, 2023.
