Jake Muzzin | Early Life

Starting with the basics, Jake Muzzin was born on February 21, 1989, to his parents Ed Muzzin and Judy Muzzin in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.

He was the single kid in the family as he had his older sister Nina and younger sister Julia by his side.

Woodstock was all about either hockey or soccer and is mostly known for farming. Most of the people at least played one. Jake played both hockey in winter and soccer in summer.

As a kid, Jake grew up cheering and supporting the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a huge fan of Doug Gilmour, the former ice-hockey player who played for seventeen different NHL teams and loved watching Mats Sundin, Wendel Clark, and Felix Potvin with the skates.

According to his father, Jake and his best friend both were on the hockey team Nate Geerklinks. They dreamed of playing for the Maple Leafs. But his father, Ed himself, was a big fan of Montreal Canadians.

When Jake had his first pair of hockey socks, he was disappointed as they were red and blue in color and not the Maple Leaf Blue.

Jake wore a Doug Gilmour shirt back then, and Jake posted the picture on social media during the last week of January 2019, which became the town’s talk.

Jake Muzzin | Playing Career

Junior

Jake initiated well with minor hockey in the Woodstock Minor Hockey Association and then moved on to play AAA in Brantford, Ontario.

Initially, he did not really think much about his OHL games, but some agents contacted him and his team to decide between NCAA and OHL. And he chose to stick with the OHL in the aftermath.

It was at the age of thirteen that he completely switched to hockey and left playing soccer there.

When Jake turned sixteen, he received his first pick, 11th overall by Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League in 2005.

But sadly, he could not take part in any of the games until late 2006 as he had to undergo herniated disc surgery.

That was really tough for him as he had to get back in shape within a year. Everyone was on their way, but his way seemed a little harder.

Moreover, Jake was assigned a quarter during the time with Sault Ste, and the family that he lived with within the quarter made the transition lot easier for a young kid. He got really close with the billet family as they, too, treated him as their own kid.

Also

Jake only could show his potential in 37 regular-season games and 13 playoff games. As a result, Jake was hired with the 11th overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jake stayed with Pittsburgh for two years but went unsigned. He served as an unrestricted free agent there and opted to go for the draft again in 2009. However, the team did not pick him this time.

Jake was titled Team Captain and was chosen for the 2010 OHL All-Star Classic. He also grabbed the Max Kaminsky Trophy for a top defenceman in the league.

Professional

Los Angeles Kings

There exist quite a few teams asking him to sign up with them, but ultimately Los Angeles came across.

He could come to the final decision only after talking to Dean Lombardi and Ron Hextall. He ended up signing with Los Angeles as a free agent that too for a three-year entry-level contract.

Jake made the Kings Opening Night Roster for the 2010-11 season. He was also placed on the Manchester Monarchs, affiliated to the Kings’ AHL.

Following that, Jake went on winning the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He really did not seem to appear in any of the games that particular season.

However, winning the Stanley Cup over the New Jersey Devils was not included in the celebratory picture.

Well, Jake went on playing for the Kings and also became the lineup for the team. In 2013, he and the Kings agreed to extend the contract for two years. He garnished six goals and six assists in 26 games in the 2014 playoffs.

The following year in 2015, Jake again signed a five-year contract extension with the team. Later, things did not go well further, as he was posted on the injured list in early 2018.

Jake faced a major upper-body injury during the 2018 playoffs. He could play only two games against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Toronto Maple Leafs

His team traded Jake to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Carl Grundström on January 28, 2019. Well, in any of the ways, his childhood dream came true.

News hailed that Jakes’ parents were coming to Detroit to see their kid playing his first game for his childhood favorite hockey team.

Jake Muzzin | Injury

The Toronto Maple Leafs stated on February 26, 2020, that defenceman Jake Muzzin was supposed to be out of the lineup for nearly four weeks after bearing a broken hand in last night’s win upon Tampa Bay.

The Maple Leafs also stated that the club had revived defenceman Calle Rosen from the Toronto Marlies (AHL).

Rosen, 26, was received in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche on February 24.

During the term, the Vaxjo, Sweden native successfully registered two assists in eight matches with the Avalanche and 15 points (three goals, 12 assists) in 35 games with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.

Muzzin had accumulated 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) in 53 plays with the Maple Leafs during that season.

In 579 career regular-season NHL games, the Woodstock, Ontario native had recorded 252 points (62 goals, 190 assists) while adding 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 57 playoff games.

Furthermore

Jake Muzzin slipped with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday for the first time since the defenseman was hurt in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers upon the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“Jake’s doing strong in the sense that he’s finally got a little bit of liberty,” Maple Leaf’s coach Sheldon Keefe said. “He left his hotel room this morning for the first time, and he actually got out on the ice and got a little skate in this morning.”

“So that’s obviously very positive thinking what he had been through.”

Muzzin was hurt when he fell chest-first into Blue Jackets’ legs forward Oliver Bjorkstrand behind Toronto’s goal.

He was down for more than 10 minutes, lying on his back before being immobilized and taken off the ice on a stretcher.

He was released from a hospital overnight Tuesday but was ruled out for the Qualifiers’ remainder the following day.

Martin Marincin has played the past two games in Muzzin’s place.

“Certainly, we’re very lucky that he’s recovering quickly in comparison to what we feared for the worst in terms of him being on the stretcher and all that kind of stuff,” Keefe said of Muzzin.

“So it’s great to see him around our team and moving around today.”

Toronto plays Columbus in Game 5 of the Qualifiers at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, the Eastern Conference hub city, on Sunday (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVAS, FS-O).

The victor proceeded to play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first step of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the failure got a 12.5 percent chance of obtaining the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery.
