Willie Jake Reed, or Jake Reed, is a former professional NFL wide receiver who played for 12 years in the National Football League (NFL).

Jake Reed was born in his hometown Covington, Georgia, on September 28, 1967. The player has a brother, Dale Carter, who is also a former NFL Professional player.


As a young kid, Jake attended Newton High School, a four-year public high school that offers classes from grade nine to 12. The school is located 32 miles outside Atlanta.

Likewise, after Reed’s high-school graduation, he attended Grambling State University. Soon, he started his playing career with the Grambling State Tigers, the college team representing the Grambling State University. The Tigers play in the NCCA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS)

Jake Reed has a playing career that spans over one decade. In Reed’s 12 years in the NFL, he has played for teams such as Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints.

However, before the NFL draft, Reed played college football for Grambling State University. He played for the Grambling State Tigers, a team playing in the NCAA Division as a wide receiver.

NFL Draft

In the third round of the 1991 NFL Draft held on 21-22 April at Marriot Marquis in New York, Minnesota Vikings selected Jake Reed. The Vikings signed Reed in the Herschel Walker trade, the most extensive player trade in the National Football League’s long history. 

Minnesota Vikings (1991 – 1999)

Age 24 – 30

Jake Reed debuted in the National Football League for the Minnesota Vikings at the age of 24. However, he made only one appearance in his debut season and did not feature for the Vikings.

Moving forward in his journey with the Vikings, in his second year, Reed managed 16 appearances. Likewise, he worked six receptions and covered 142 receiving yards. 

At age 26, Reed featured only ten times for the Vikings in the 1993/94 NFL season. In those ten games, Reed covered 65 rushing yards.

Jake Reed’s fourth season would be his breakout season as he started impressing his critics and team-mates. In the 16 games that he played, Reed managed his first 1000-yard season. The wide receiver got off the mark with 1175 running yards. 

Also, he scored four touchdowns and had 85 receptions. The 1994 NFL season saw the running back combining with fellow team-mate Cris Carter for 207 receptions, an NFL record.

Success Period

At age 28, Reed was finally living up to his potential and the hype surrounding him. The player continued another 1000-yard season in 1995/96 by featuring 16 times for the Vikings. Also, he scored nine touchdowns and had 72 receptions as a wide receiver. 

Impressively, Reed continued displaying great performances for the Vikings. He made a personal career-high of 1320 yards in the 1996/97 season. In the same season, Reed scored seven touchdowns and had 72 receptions.

Jake Reed peaked in his career at the age of 30 with the Minnesota Vikings. In the 1996/17 season of the National Football League, he made 1138 yards in 16 games for the Vikings. Also, he made 68 receptions and scored six touchdowns.

In September 1997, Jake Reed became the NFC Offensive Player of the month. He was given the award due to his stellar display in the NFL season. Jake had 34 catches and 521 yards, which made the wide receiver from Georgia a worthy nominee and winner of the award.

Age 30 – 32

However, Jake Reed had a dip in performance in the next few seasons. In comparison to previous seasons, Reed could not produce elevating displays. He managed only 474 receiving yards and made 34 receptions in 11 games for the Vikings.

In his final season for the Vikings, Reed featured 16 times as a wide receiver. Likewise, he made 643 receiving yards, an improvement compared to last season. Also, Reed scored two touchdowns and completed 44 receptions.

Reed made 12 plays of over 50 yards with Minnesota, the second-highest in the team history. 

New Orleans Saints

After nine years with Minnesota Vikings, Jake signed for the New Orleans Saints in 2000. At age 33, he made seven appearances for the Saints, covered 206 receiving yards, and made 16 touchdowns.

After his short spell with the New Orleans Saints, Reed moved back to Minnesota Vikings. 

Minnesota Vikings 

In his spell back with the Vikings in 2001, Reed played a total of 16 games. In those 16 games, Reed was successful in covering 309 rushing yards and making 27 receptions. 

Jake Reed appeared 134 times for the Minnesota Vikings. Likewise, he covered 6433 receiving yards and made 413 receptions for the Vikings. Besides that, Jake Reed scored 82 touchdowns for them. 

New Orleans Saints

Amusingly, Jake Reed again signed for the New Orleans Saints, taking him back to the club for his second spell. In his second spell with the Saints, the wide receiver covered 360 yards and made 21 receptions. He also scored three touchdowns for the New Orleans Saints. 

To sum up Reed’s time with the Saints, he played 21 times for them. In those two years, he covered 566 receiving yards. Likewise, he made 37 receptions and scored three touchdowns for them.

Jake Reed spent twelve years playing in the NFL. The twelve years included some impressive performances. Reed’s most notable contribution was when he had four consecutive seasons covering 1,000+yard games for the Minnesota Vikings between 1994-1997.
