Tonya was laid off from a factory job she had held for ten years. She had been working there throughout Jaleel’s middle school years.
She couldn’t afford their apartment as a single parent with two young sons to raise (Jaleel and Jayshawn — three years older), forcing the family to stay with relatives, motels, and hotels.
Shortly after, his grandma had a heart attack. McLaughlin lost her house, where he was living, after her passing.
So the NFL running back, Jaleel, along with his mother and siblings, lived in a car parked outside a McDonald’s for several months.
