Jim Price, the former catcher for the Detroit Tigers, passed away on Monday at 81.

After his playing career, he spent much of the past three decades as a radio analyst and color commentator for the team. 

Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Price served as the backup catcher to All-Star Bill Freehan from 1967 to 1971.

Notably, he played a significant role in the Tigers’ 1968 World Series victory against the St. Louis Cardinals, appearing in 64 games during that season.

Throughout his MLB career, which spanned 261 games exclusively with the Tigers, Price held a batting average of .214 and contributed 18 home runs, 71 RBIs, 62 walks, and 70 strikeouts.

Following his playing career, Price transitioned to a broadcasting role, a prominent job shift. 

In 1993, Price took on the role of play-by-play broadcaster for the Tigers’ games on Pro-Am Sports System (PASS), and later in 1998, he transitioned to the radio booth.

Following his playing career, he transitioned into the realm of sports reporting and anchoring, holding a position at WJBK-TV (Channel 2).

Furthermore, during the 1980s and 90s, he was actively engaged within the Detroit Tigers organization, assuming roles in their front office, including that of community relations director.

During the early 1980s, Price’s talents extended to ESPN, where he contributed to the network.

In 1993, he was selected as the fresh play-by-play commentator for the Tigers’ telecasts on PASS cable.

Subsequently, after two years, he shifted to the role of an analyst.

From 1999 to 2002, Price returned to radio broadcasts before becoming the primary radio broadcaster for the Tigers in 2003.

Price retained this position until his demise, and his last call on the airwaves was on July 9, 2023.

He became a part of the radio crew in June 1998, joining midway through the season.

However, in recent years, his declining health led to reduced travel with the Tigers for numerous away games.

Jim Price passes away at 81, on Monday, in the presence of his friends and family. 

He is survived by his wife, Lisa, son Jack, and other family members, who remain out of the limelight. 

Based on information from his close friend and longstanding collaborator, Gary Kotlarz, it was revealed that Jim was undergoing chemotherapy to treat his cancer.

Hence, his cause of death might be the aforementioned reason. 

Nevertheless, despite these health struggles, he remained actively engaged in charitable initiatives and fundraising efforts that directly benefited his foundation.

Tragically, just prior to an annual golf event in Sterling Heights, the news of Price’s passing surfaced.

This event, hosted at the Maple Lane Golf Course, has consistently played a pivotal role in amassing over $50,000 in funds to support the cause of autism awareness and education.

Kotlarz extended his sympathies and highlighted Price’s enduring commitment to his philanthropic work.
