The Cleveland Cavaliers signed Holland to a two-way contract on September 8, 2017. He will split time between both the Cavs and their G-League club, the Canton Charge, per the rules of the agreement. Holland is the Cavaliers’ first player to sign such a contract.

John Holland: Struggles

Holland resided roughly an hour’s drive south of Cleveland, just outside of Canton. He shared a home with a friend, and his life was far from glamorous — particularly for a professional athlete.

At a nearby community facility, there was practice, weight training, film sessions, and the games themselves. Aside from that, the guys spent a lot of their free time at the apartment complex where they all lived.

It was a gamble to play in the D-League when you could make much more money playing elsewhere.

Only a small percentage of D-League players are called up to the NBA. And the rivalry for players in Holland’s position was tremendous.

Only one of his colleagues, a player with previous NBA experience, was called up as the season progressed.

Holland went unnoticed: he wasn’t the team’s leading scorer, but he was consistently good, propelling Canton to a 12-game winning streak and a D-League playoff berth. However, later he was finally selected by Boston Celtics.

Net Worth

John Holland’s net worth is estimated to be around $1 million. He makes his earning primary playing through different minor leagues.

Moreover, minor league teams can make less than $20,000 per year outside of the NBA.

Even the lowest-paid benchwarmer garners more than $500,000 per season in the NBA, a league of millionaires.

Moreover, Holland decided that returning to the United States was his best bet, and that’s how he ended up in the D-League in Canton, earning $19,000.

The Celtics paid him $25,000 for two games and the playoffs, which was more than his whole D-League season pay. He became the first Cavalier to sign a two-way contract.

Furthermore, the starting salary for two-way players is $77,250, prorated for days spent in the G League.

Two-way players can earn up to $385,000, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times, including a prorated NBA Rookie Pay for time spent with the parent team.
