Early Life

Joshua Giddey, famous as Josh Giddey, was born in Melbourne, Australia, on October 10, 2002. 

He was a student at St. Kevin’s College in Melbourne and soon became an emerging basketball star for Australia.

He then joined the NBA Global Academy, a basketball training center in Canberra. Alongside his training at the academy, he also attended the UC Senior Secondary College, Lake Ginninderra.

In 2019, Giddey was a part of the under-18 squad at the Australian Championships. He averaged 20 points, 6 assists, and 8.3 rebounds per game. His stellar performances led VIC Metro to the title. 

Giddey, in 2020, also helped the NBA Global Academy to win the Torneo Junior Ciutat de L’Hospitalet title at Barcelona. Giddey was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the same. 

He also participated in Basketball Without Borders in the same year at Chicago. The Aussie boy was named to the All-Star team of the camp. 

Soon, in 2021, Giddey got selected by the Thunder in the NBA Draft. 

Career

Giddey signed with the Adelaide 36ers in March 2020 in the National Basketball League (NBL). 

At The Oklahoma City Thunder

Josh Giddey declared himself available for the 2021 NBA Draft; in July 2021, he was picked by the Oklahoma City Thunder. 

Giddey signed a contract with the Thunder on August 8, 2021. And unfortunately, he suffered an ankle injury the same day, just a few minutes into his NBA Summer League debut. 

The Aussie shooting guard was thus ruled out for the rest of the tournament to avoid additional injury. 

In October 2021, Giddey finally made his debut in the NBA. He scored 4 points, 3 assists, and made 10 rebounds. However, this came in a loss to Utah Jazz. 

On 27 October 2021 recorded his first double-double in the same month, scoring 18 points and 10 assists against the Lakers.

With this, he became the third-youngest player to record over ten assists in a game.

Giddey scored a further double-double in the league. And in January 2022, he became the youngest in the NBA to record a triple-double.

The Australian rookie, Josh Giddey, made history by notching a triple-double in the NBA. With this, he became the youngest player in the history of the NBA to do so. 

Josh scored 17 points, 14 assists, and 13 rebounds against the Dallas Mavericks for the Thunder. Despite Giddey’s stellar performance, the Thunder lost the game to the Mavericks.

LaMelo Ball previously held the record for the youngest player to score a triple-double. Ball set this record at 19 years and 140 days.

Giddey overtook Ball by setting this record at 19 years and 84 days. 

In just a year, this record was broken twice. Ball had set this record in January of the previous year.

Giddey recorded history by becoming one of the players alongside Luka Doncic, Ben Simmons, and Grant Hill with 1000 points, 700 rebounds, and 500 assists in their first 100 career games.

This feat was achieved by him while playing against Miami Heat on January 10, 2023.

On 26 March, Josh drilled 3-pointers in a victory match against the Trailblazers.

He made at least one triple in 11 of the team’s last 12 games while making the tough 3-pointers off the dribble too.

The shooting guard made 17 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and one steal over 35 minutes.

He delivered one of the finest games in a lost match against the Los Angeles Lakers on 25 March with 27 points, 17 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.

Giddey shot 12-24 from the floor (50%) and 2-6 from deep and finished with a game-high +14 plus-minus.
