High School Career

In his junior year, Kemba played against Simeon Career Academy and senior guard Derrick Rose at Madison Square Garden in a 53-51 victory. Overall in his senior year, he averaged 18.2 points and 5.3 assists per game.

Besides, he earned a spot on the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Team. He was able to play in the elite New York Cty Gauchos, which is a premier AAU basketball program for youth.

He was also joined by Jordan Theodore, Darryl Bryant, Devin Hill, and Danny Jennings. His team finished at number 1 in the nation.

College Career

2008-09

Kemba played in every contest. Besides, he was named to the Big East All-Rookie Team. He started in only two games. However, he averaged 25.5 minutes per contest, far more than any regular non-starter.

He also helped the Huskies advance to the 2009 Final Four with a 23-point effort in the Elite Eight versus Missouri.

2009-10

Kemba started in all 34 of the games and scored an average of 14.6 points. He also led the team in scoring for the eighth time in the last nine games of the season, with 18 points at Virginia Tech.

He was also named to the First Team All-District by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

2010-11

In his junior year, Kemba played in twelve games and became the nation’s leading scorer with 26.7 points per contest. Besides, he averaged five rebounds and 3.8 assists.

In the Big East Championship, he led the Huskies to victory against the Louisville Cardinals and earned tournament MVP honors.

He scored 130 points in over five games, a record of points scored for not only the Big East but for any conference tournament in the past 15 seasons.

Hence, the University of Connecticut became the first school to win five games in five days and earned a conference championship.

Kemba led the University of Connecticut to win the Division I Championship on April 4, 2011. Besides, he won the honor of the NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Professional Career

Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets

2011-14

Kemba left the University of Connecticut on April 1 and entered the 2011 NBA draft. He was selected 9th overall by the Charlotte Bobcats.

He scored his first triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists, and ten rebounds in a game against the Washington Wizards on January 28, 2012.

Kemba participated in the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star Weekend.

Later, Kemba won his first game in the NBA career against the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he scored 22 points on 9 of 19 shooting, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

He finished the 2012-13 season with averages of 17.7 points, 5.7 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and two steals per contest.

Kemba helped the Bobcats defeat the Golden State Warriors 115-111 by scoring 31 points, 27 in the second half, and scoring the final 15 points, on December 9, 2013.

He contributed 24 points, five rebounds, and a career-high 16 assists in a 116-98 win against the Detroit Pistons on February 19, 2014.

In a time period of one week, he averaged 22.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.5 rebounds and was awarded the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

He scored his second career triple-double against the Orlando Magic on April 4, 2014, and won 13 points, ten assists, and ten rebounds.

2014-16

Charlotte Bobcats was renamed Charlotte Hornets. On October 29, Kemba finished the 2014-15 season-opening game with 26 points, five assists, and six rebounds and won 108-106 against the Milwaukee Bucks.

He scored a three-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to force overtime and hit the shot that finished the game. The next day, he signed a four-year contract worth $48 million with the Hornets.

Kemba scored a career-high 42 points against the Orlando Magic on December 27 and set a Charlotte Hornets franchise record for most points scored in half with his 35 points that he posted in the second.

In three consecutive games played between January 3 till January 7, he scored 30, 33, and 31 points, respectively, and became one of the four players in Charlotte Hornets’ franchise history to have three or more consecutive scoring games 30-plus points.

Kemba was ruled out for six weeks after he underwent successful surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee on January 28, 2015. 

He recorded a then season-high 39 points against the Sacramento Kings on November 23, 2015.

He also set a career-high and a franchise record of 52 points in a game against the Utah Jazz on January 18, 2016. On March 9, he became the third Hornets player to make 500 career three-pointers.

2016-18

Kemba scored a season-high of 30 points in a game against the Brooklyn Nets on November 4, 2016.

He scored his 7000th point with the Charlotte Hornets franchise on December 29 against the Miami Heat when he hit a three-pointer with 4 minutes and 16 seconds left in the first quarter.

He became the fourth player in franchise history to reach that mark. On December 31, he played his 31st game of 30 points or more.

During the game against Denver Nuggets on March 31, 2017, he became the second player in team history to reach 8000 career points, second only to Dell Curry.

Kemba scored 36 points in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks, making it his 193rd 20-point game on November 1, 2017, and breaking the franchise record.

He became the first player in franchise history with 200 career 20-point games on December 4 when he scored 29 points against Orlando Magic.

On January 15, he scored 20 points in a 118–107 win over the Detroit Pistons, thus reaching 9,000 career points.

On January 24, Kemba became the second Hornets’ player with 900 career 3-pointers, besides Dell Curry (929).

He also set franchise and career-highs with nine 3-pointers in a game against Atlanta Hawks. Then, on February 4, he broke the franchise record for 3-pointers with 930.

2018-19

Kemba scored 41 points against Milwaukee Bucks on October 17, 2018, setting a franchise record for most points scored in a season opener. Besides, it became the 10th 40-point game of his career.

Three days later, he made his career 10,000-point mark during a game against the Miami Heat.

He set the NBA record for most three-point field goals through the first three games of a season with 19 and became the first player in NBA history to make five or more three-point field goals in each of the first three games.

Kemba achieved a career-high and franchise-best 60 points on November 17 in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers. He made his 502nd career start for the Hornets on December 5, the most of any player in team history.

On April 3, he recorded his 26th 30-point game of the season, also setting a franchise record. He is the ninth player in NBA history to connect on 250+ 3-pointers in a season.

Boston Celtics (2019 – Present)

Kemba joined the Boston Celtics on July 6, 2019, signing a contract for four years worth $141 million. He made his debut on October 23, 2019, against the Philadelphia 76ers.

On December 11, he scored a season-high of 44 points in a game against the Indiana Pacers.
