One of the greatest rappers alive, Kendrick Lamar, gave a shout-out to soccer sensations Lionel Messi and Neymar in his new song ‘The Hillbillies’ with Baby Keem.
Earlier this month, Lamar appeared on a remix of Beyoncé’s track “AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM.”
Building on that momentum, he has once again graced us with the new song “The Hillbillies,” a collaboration with his cousin and frequent collaborator, Baby Keem.
The release premiered on the YouTube channel managed by Lamar’s entertainment company, pgLang.
Kendrick Lamar Shout-Out Messi And Neymar In His New Song ‘The Hillbillies’
“The Hillbillies,” produced by EVILGAINE of Surf Gang, showcases Lamar and Keem’s lyrical expertise while incorporating clever samples.
The song cleverly borrows from Bon Iver’s pandemic-era track “PDLIF,” which itself samples U.K. jazz artist Alabaster DePlume’s “Visit Croatia.”
This layered musical approach adds depth and complexity to the track, highlighting the artists’ appreciation for different genres and styles.
Despite the weighty sample choices, the song takes on a lighthearted and playful tone.
Kendrick and Keem engage in a back-and-forth exchange, touching on topics such as women, designer clothes, and even soccer.
Drawing inspiration from their shared experience attending a PSG match last October, where Lionel Messi and Neymar scored goals, the rappers compare themselves to these legendary South American soccer players.
The song starts with Baby Keem, who boldly asserts that he can only date women who match his elevated status.
He even dismisses the luxury brand Giuseppe Zanotti as being too cheap for him. As the verse transitions to Kendrick, he seamlessly takes over the metaphorical mic, embodying the spirit of Lionel Messi on the track.
By combining their lyrical skills, creative sampling choices, and playful banter, Kendrick and Baby elevate “The Hillbillies” into an engaging and memorable musical experience.
