Kevin Martin was born in Zanesville, Ohio, to Kevin Martin Sr. and Jonathon Martin, with Jonathon Martin as his younger brother.

Furthermore, his entire family grew up watching NBA games and cheering for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Martin, on the other hand, idolized Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan.

Early Career and Playoffs

Martin joined the NBA Draft after his junior year at Western Carolina. Scouts expected him to be taken in the first round after his excellent collegiate career.

Martin was taken in the first round by the Sacramento Kings, who had the 26th pick. He was also a backup point guard during his debut season and only got 10 minutes of playing time in 45 regular-season games.

His position as a shooting guard shifted the following season dramatically.

Despite this, the second-year guard came through in the clutch, nailing a legendary buzzer-beater shot over Tim Duncan to win the series’ third match.

They did, however, lose the series 4-2.

Breakout Campaign and Contract Extension

Following Martin’s strong postseason performance, the Kings’ head coach, Eric Musselman, placed him in the starting lineup.

He went from averaging 10.8 points, 1.3 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game to averaging 20.2 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.3 rebounds. Despite this, he was unable to assist the Kings in securing a winning season.

Later, on August 28, 2007, Sacramento signed him to a five-year, $55 million contract.

Sacramento also sacked Eric Musselman and replaced him with Reggie Theus for the 2007-08 season. As a result, the new head coach sent Martin to the bench as a backup guard.

He accepted the job and averaged 23.7 points per game as the team’s sixth man. Similarly, he averages a career-high 24.6 points per game the following season.

Houston Rockets

Houston bought Martin in a three-way deal with the Knicks and the Kings on February 18, 2010. For the Rockets, he was the starting shooting guard.

He, too, had a dismal debut, scoring 14 points on 3-16 shooting from the field.

Additionally, in his first game back in Sacramento, he redeemed himself by scoring 39 points.

The star was injured early in the next season due to a shoulder issue.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Martin was traded by the Rockets to the Thunder on October 27, 2012, considering future NBA star James Harden.

The NBA player signed a four-year, $28 million contract with the Timberwolves on July 2, 2013.

K-mart quickly established himself as a vital squad member and one of the team’s top scorers. However, he had surgery to heal a fracture in his right wrist in the third season.

As a result, Kevin missed the entire season and was subsequently waived in a buyout agreement with the Timberwolves.
