Lieke Elisabeth Petronella Martens was born on December 16, 1992, in Bergen, Limburg, Netherlands.

Martens began playing soccer at age five with the local team RKVV Montagnards.

At the age of thirteen, she joined Boxmeer Club Olympia ’18 at the request of then-national team coach Vera Pauw. There she usually played with boys’ teams.

The 32 year-old player played for Heerenveen, VVV-Venlo, Standard Liege, FCR 2001 Duisburg, Kopparbergs/ Goteborg, Rosengard before joining Barcelona in 2017.

Martens was vital in completing FC Barcelona Femeni’s first continental treble, winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the Primera Division, and the Copa de la Reina in 2021.

On June 16, 2022, she signed a three-season deal with Paris Saint-Germain and has been playing for them.

The Dutch striker Lieke Martens is married to the lover of her life Benjamin van Leer, who previously played soccer.

She started dating Benjamin in 2018, and the couple confirmed after they took on social media, posting matching stories.

The pair decided to start an implied parental life and adopted a puppy together in 2020.  

On November 12, 2021, Martens shared an Instagram post with the caption “A million times yes,” as Benjamin had proposed to her, and she said yes. 

Finally, they tied the knot in Spain on June 13, 2023, in a grand marriage ceremony accompanied by friends and family.

The former goalkeeper Benjamin van Leer was born on April 9, 1992, in Nieuwegein, Netherlands.

Benjamin last played for a professional soccer team named Sparta Rotterdam.

He formerly played for Jong PSV, Roda JC Kerkrade, and Ajax and hung up his boots on July 1, 2022.

Currently, he is working as a sales director for a Dutch company named Turnkey del Sol. The company facilitates real estate trade in the Costa del Sol region.

Return After The Injury

The Netherlands forward Lieke Martens suffered an injury at the 2022 European Championship, which left her out for the rest of the tournament.

The 32 year-old attacker showed her experience and significant contribution to the team as she started in each of the three group-stage games for the Netherlands that summer.

Unfortunately, the Dutch team was knocked out by France in the quarterfinals.

In the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Netherlands qualified for the Round of 16, finishing first in a tough group including USA, Portugal, and Vietnam.

Martens scored and assisted each goal in a comprehensive 7-0 victory against Vietnam on August 1, 2023.

She will be looking to continue her impressive run alongside teammates Esmee Brugts, Danielle van de Donk, and others in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
