She used to travel by train to Colorado to get her skiing lessons at the Ski Club Vail. After several years of difficult commutes for training, Lindsey and her family finally moved to Vail, Colorado so that she could practice conveniently.

Seeing their support boosted her physical and mental strength, creating a skiing success path.

She got her early ski lessons from her grandfather, Don Kildow, in Milton, Wisconsin.

Educational Background

Usually, when people know what they are good at or what they like, they focus their energy and time on that.

Lindsey Vonn knew she was not that much of an academic person. She enjoyed skiing, and everything else revolved around that.

Due to vigorous training schedules, Lindsey could not attend school regularly.

Yet this great former athlete graduated from the University of Missouri High School through the University Center of Distance and Independent learning.

Age, Height, & Weight

Vonn is 1.73 meters tall and weighs around 141 pounds. As of 2024, she is 39 years old and still looks healthy and energetic.

She maintained a strict diet, especially during her ski season. Her diet included foods rich in protein and carbs.

Likewise, her nutritionist Phil Goglia helped her shift her focus more on drinking water, eating clean food, and timing her meals. These habits enabled her to stay in her best shape.

Early Year & Winter Olympics

Early Career

Olympic champion, Lindsey Vonn, knew what she wanted to do at an early age.

Vonn said in her later interviews that she was not good at many things except skiing.

She trained at Buck Hill when she was 2 with her father’s coach Erich Sailer, a US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame inductee.

The 1990s

At 7, Lindsey Vonn had already skied in Colorado, Oregon, and Minnesota all year round.

In 1995, when she met Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, she was inspired to become like her.

Lindsey considers Picabo to be her role model. Later, Picabo partially mentored Vonn in skiing.

In her first year at SCV (Ski Club Vail), the endearing athlete developed challenging and demanding conditions; the skiers were not trained inside the gates.

Lindsey received her lessons from a female coach, Colby S. Scudder. Scudder allowed Vonn to enroll in the age-class skiing program, which was not allowed for her age skiers.

Under that program, she received training from multiple coaches, such as Todd A. Rash, Reid Philips, and Gus Peretz, who helped her perfect her technical skills. Additionally, she began the “in-gate” training.

In 1999, Lindsey Vonn and Will McDonald became the first Americans to win the “Cadets” slalom in Italy’s Trofeo Topolino di Sci Alpino.

The 2000s

At 16, Vonn made her World Cup debut, on November 18, 2000, in Park City, Utah.

Similarly, at 17, she debuted at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, participated in slalom, and combined with the sixth spot.

In 2003, Lindsey finally secured a silver medal downhill at the Junior World Championship in France. She made third place downhill at the World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, in January 2004.

The same year, she secured a silver medal downhill at the US Alpine Championships.

Adding more to Lindsey’s winning history, in 2005, she got fourth place in combined and downhill at the first World Championships in Bormio, Italy.

Even though she reached the ninth position in super-G, she could not complete the giant slalom.

Lindsey became the winner of the World Cup title in 2008. She is the second American woman to be honored with the most downhill victories after Tamara McKinney.

The World Cup champion, Vonn, won the US Alpine Championships combined title in 2008.

Most importantly, in 2009, she became the first woman to win the world super-G title in Val-d’Isere, France.

Also, she won the downhill round. However, later she was disqualified for splitting a gate.

Challenges

Lindsey said she would not retire until she breaks Ingemar Sternmark’s record. However, in October 2018, she announced that she would retire at the end of the 2018-19 Fis Alpine Ski World Cup.

After winning the 20th World Cup crystal globe title in 2016, she surpassed Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden, who won 19 globes from 1975 to 1984.

Likewise, she said whenever she felt uninspired, she thought of her mom. Her mother, Krohn, survived a stroke.

When Krohn was 38 weeks pregnant, she survived a stroke and has been dealing with its aftereffects.

She was given a 50-50 chance of survival; fortunately, Krohn recovered far beyond doctors’ expectations, became a lawyer, and had four more children.

Whenever Vonn was injured, she would think of her mom. Krohn’s worked relentlessly so Lindsey could succeed, which helped the skier continue despite hard times.

Her injury was the sole reason behind her retirement; however, she still likes skiing.

Vonn became the first woman to ski the Streif not as a competitor but on her own in January 2023.

She also raises awareness about mental health struggles athletes face. In one of the episodes of The Squeeze, the podcast by Taylor Lautner, she recalled the “brutal” decision to retire from her career because of multiple bodily injuries.

She found it hard to get out of bed at some point while skiing professionally.

In 2006, during the Winter Olympics, she was hospitalized after a nasty crash. Yet, the brave skier returned after two days to complete the competition.

Similarly, in 2007 she had a low-level ACL sprain, which led to early endings, yet she secured the third spot in The women’s World Cup super-G and downhill races.

Towards the end of 2012, she experienced difficulties due to injuries and illnesses, yet in 2013 she secured a continued win of two downhill and a super-G race in Lake Louise.

Again in 2018, she reached sixth place in the women’s super-G and won the bronze downhill.

Additionally, she sustained a serious knee injury during the 2015-16 World Cup. It was later revealed that she had one hairline left knee fracture.

Although her right knee is permanently damaged, she sometimes skis independently.

She has had torn ACLs, suffered fractures near her left knee, broken her ankle, sliced her right thumb, had a concussion, and so on.

Hence, her injuries were one of the main reasons for her retirement.

The champion skier said it was finally time to listen to her body, stop for the moment, and focus on her recovery.
