Margarita Mamun | Early Life

Margarita Mamun was born on November 01, 1995, in Moscow, Russia. Mamun was born as the first child to Bangladeshi father Abdullah AI Mamun and Russian mother, Anna.

His father came to Russia for higher studies and had a master’s degree in Marine engineering. On the other hand, her mother is a former rhythmic gymnast.

Mamun had dual citizenship, both Russian and Bangladeshi. But, due to prohibiting laws to having dual citizenship, Mamun currently only has Russian citizenship.

She also has a younger brother named  Filipp Al Mamun.

Mamun was closest to her father, but unfortunately, his father died on 26 August 2016 due to cancer. His father died six days after she won Olympic gold.

How did Margarita Mamun start Rhythmic Gymnast?

Margarita Mamun was very passionate about dancing and figure skating. She was a naturally gifted gymnast who was very flexible with her body.

The gymnast prodigy even fooled the gymnastic coach, who thought Mamun was practicing when she wasn’t. She had that quality to become a professional gymnast.

So, Mamun’s parents thought to let her do gymnastics. She started doing gymnastics at the age of seven.

Margarita didn’t train professionally but went to an ordinary club as part of extra circular activities.

But, her skills were not a joke. She quickly became one of the best junior gymnasts and had the potential to become a professional. All she needed was a good platform and a good coach.

Professional Career

Mamun started her professional gymnastic career by competing in International tournaments. Her first tournament was Miss Valentine Cup in 2005.

She also competed for Bangladesh when she was 12 years old.

Mamun started her senior-level career, and her first competition as a senior was the International Tournament of Calais. She won her first senior gold in the competition.

After that, the young gymnast started competing in several international tournaments earning medals and a name in rhythmic gymnastics.

World Cup

Mamun also competed in the 2011 World Cup in Canada, where she was able to win the bronze medal and a gold medal. The following year, she won the all-around gold medal.

European Championships

Margarita has made her debut in the European championship in 2013, where she was able to win two golds and three silvers.

She won the team and ribbon category golds, whereas silvers for the hoop, ball, and clubs.

Likewise, the Russian-born also won two golds and one silver at the 2015 European Championships. The following year she won the silver medal in the all-around category.

Other than that, Margarita is a three-time World gymnastic champion from 2013-2015.

She made her debut in the 2013 World Championship, where she won two gold medals and one bronze medal. She won gold for ball and clubs, whereas bronze for the hoop.

The following year, the world champion again won three gold and three silver medals. She won two gold and three silvers in the 2015 World Championship.

Grand Prix Final

Mamun made her debut in Grand Prix Final in 2013, where she won three golds for all-around, hoop, and ball category.

However, she placed second for the clubs and thus, won a silver medal.

The following year, she came to a much more substantial win all four gold medals that she had aimed for. 

Also, Mamun won three golds at the 2015 Grand Prix Final.

Olympics

Mamun was the top scorer at the preliminary Gymnastics session. She competed at the rhythmic gymnastic individual all-around final opposite world champion Yana Kudryavtseva.

It was an intense competition as both were neck-to-neck competitors, and it was hard to predict who would win the gold.

A few seconds to the game end, Yana missed one of her clubs. On the other hand, Mamun was stable railing on her clubs and thus, won the competition with 76.48 points.

Mamun won her first Olympic gold medal defeating the world champion Yana. Moreover, Mamun was only the gymnast to score over 19 out of 20 on all four games.

The retirement

Despite her peaking career, Margarita retired from rhythmic gymnastics in 2017. She held a press conference that she was officially retired.

This shocked everyone as she was doing great in rhymic gymnastics and didn’t have any injury either.

Sadly, the Russian-born ended her career at the age of 22, saying that she had achieved everything she wanted in this sport and wanted to explore more in her life other than rhythmic gymnastics.
