Maria Sharapova: Early Life, Family, and Education

Maria was born in Nyagan, a town in the Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. She is the daughter of Yuri Sharapov and Yelena Sharapov.

Besides, she is the niece of Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who is a former Russian player. Also, the Russian model Alesya Kafelnikova is her cousin.

Yuri and Yelena used to live in the Gomel region of the Byelorussian SSR. After the 1996 Chornobyl nuclear accident near Pripyat, there were many concerns about its regional effects.
