Mark Madsen | Early Life and Career

Mark (fully named Mark Overgaard Madsen) was born on September 23, 1984, under the star sign of Libra in Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. Although not much is known about Mark’s childhood days, he was born in the family of the Mormon religion. 

Today, Mark is a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Furthermore, he is the fifth child among the ten total children in the family. Talking about his career, he first fell in love with wrestling at the young age of six.

Well, he was inspired by his grandfather, who worked at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. All the details on his familial background, education, and parents are all on the shade. 

Wrestling

Mark Madsen first started in the wrestling arena back at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Unfortunately, his debut match was a loss against Russia’s Varteres Samurgashev. Well, he lost his men’s Greco-Roman 74 kg fight in the first preliminary round. 

Even though Mark Madsen had trained on one of the best clubs with one of the best training, his initial career days were in tatters. Yet again, in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Mark lost again to another Russian wrestler Roman Vlasov

Anyways, he dragged and made up for the repechage bout as he took the victory over France’s Christophe Guénot. Following it, Mark Madsen made it to the bronze medal, but his only chance was lost against Lithuania’s Aleksandr Kazakevič. 

Altogether, his series of losses yet nothing but devotion bought him to be an Olympian just as he had dreamed about alongside his grandfather. During the 2016 Rio Olympics held at Rio, Mark bagged the silver in men’s Greco-Roman 75 kg.

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

Indeed, wrestling wasn’t the only point where Mark Madsen had viewed himself. As a matter of fact, he commenced training and has been a part of the MMA since late 2012. However, he only signed a contract with European MMA in February 2013.

Well, it is a complicated matter as Mark Madsen was still getting his salary from the Danish Wrestling Federation, and he had to halt his MMA in between. At first, Mark competed professionally in the MMA field in 2013 and 2014 but stopped until his retirement. 

In 2016, after his wrestling retirement, Mark Madsen collected four straight professional victories in the regional circuit. Right after it, he then signed a contract with the Cage Warriors. 

Moving on, Mark Madsen debuted on September 23, 2018, against Alexandre Bordin at Cage Warriors Academy’s inaugural event. He successfully bagged the event through a unanimous decision victory by dominant grappling.

Likewise, he started his practice with the Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Following Mark’s training, he fought against Mathew Bonner on December 15, 2018. The match took place under the event of Cage Warriors Academy Denmark 2 via unanimous decision.

Nearly a year later, on March 9, 2019, Mark Madsen made his Cage Warriors debut at Cage Warriors 103. This very fight added to his victory list via unanimous decision.

Lastly, he faced Danish boxer Patrick Nielsen, as he won the fight in the first round via rear-naked choke. This event took place at Olympian Fight Night 1 on June 8, 2019.

UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)

Even after featuring on the MMA field, Mark Madsen has his energy burning up for passion and dedication.

In 2019, Mark Madsen signed a four-year rookie contract to be on the MMA field. Hence, on September 28, 2019, he stood up for the match against Danillo Belluardo at UFC on ESPN+ 18. Well, he bagged his promotional debut victory through TKO in the first round.

Following it on March 7, 2020, Mark appeared for the UFC 248 against Austin Hubbard. Indeed, during the fight, many stated the match to be at high stake as Mark struggled with a broken jaw. 

As for his recent match, Mark Madsen competed in the co-main event in UFC on ESPN: Cannonier vs. Gastelum, which was held on August 21, 2021. There, he faced Clay Guida and bagged the victory via split decision.

Recent Years with Mark Madsen 

Since the past year, from 2020, Mark Madsen has suffered a lot regarding his physical and mental health. Well, we all have known Mark as a dominant figure in the sport; however, as everyone has their share of pain, he is no exception. 

After his first fight in the UFC, Mark Madsen was already struggling from a shoulder injury and staph infection. Right after his recovery, he stood to fight against Austin Hubbard, and during the course, he got into a jaw injury. 

Although he won the fight, he had to rush back home and get surgery to fix it. Yet again, his surgery got infected, and thus, he had to undergo another surgery to cover it up. Not long after it, Mark got infected with the novel coronavirus. 

But the story doesn’t end right here. After a series of stumbles on his health, his wife was later diagnosed with MS disease. Indeed, numerous of these ongoing battles would crumble and force many to back out. 

However, it was the opposite for Mark Madsen. As his wife struggled with this debilitating autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis, Madsen stated that he felt like his responsibility to be present on the ring increased.
