Matthew Slater was born in Long Beach, California, United States, on September 9, 1985, to his father, Jackie Slater, and his mother, Annie Slater.

He grew up with his only sibling brother David Slater.

When his father went to practice at the Rams practice facility, little Matthew went along with him. He would imitate all the moves of his father.

When Jackie ran, little Matthew ran along with him.
