Mike Patrick: Early Career

Mike Patrick began his career journey with broadcasting at WVSC-Radio in Somerset, Pennsylvania, in 1966.

He was named Sports Director at WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1970.

There he provided the play-by-play voice for Jacksonville Sharks’ WFL (World Football League) telecasts.

Patrick also worked for Jacksonville University basketball games on both television and radio. 

In 1975, Patrick moved to Washington, DC. He worked as a games reporter and weekend anchor for WJLA-TV until 1982.

Over this period, Mike also called play-by-play for Maryland Terrapins football and basketball broadcasts and Washington Redskins pre-season games.

Patrick’s Journey with ESPN 

Patrick started working for ESPN in 1982, shortly after its creation.

Mike Patrick is best known for his versatility as a play-by-play commentator on ESPN’s Sunday Night Football telecasts with Paul Maguire and Joe Theismann (1987–2005).

Patrick was replaced for a very short in 2004 by Pat Summerall. The reason was his heart bypass surgery.

Mike also called men’s and women’s college basketball, college football, and the College World Series for ESPN.

Patrick has also worked for several NFL playoff games for ABC Sports while the network held the Monday Night Football television package.

In 2006, Patrick became the forefront play-by-play commentator for ESPN on College Football Primetime, accompanied by Todd Blackledge and field reporter Holly Rowe.

In July 2009, ESPN declared that Patrick would begin calling Saturday afternoon ESPN/ESPN on ABC college football for the 2009 college football season, where he has remained since.

Besides, Patrick also voiced for the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Championship from 1996 to 2009. He also worked for the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, since 2003. 

Besides, Mike Patrick was also inducted into the 2009 school’s Hall of Fame at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

He was inducted alongside four former Jacksonville University student-athletes; Bill Jackson (baseball, soccer), John Petrakis (rowing), Tommy Swindell (football), and Monique Tubbs (track and field).

Although it was Patrick’s second nomination to the Hall of Fame, he was inducted for the first time.

Mike Patrick retired from ESPN after his 35-year long run. Mike Patrick called his last game for the network, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, on December 30, 2018.

Speaking about his retirement, Patrick proudly said, “It’s wonderful to reflect on how I’ve done exactly what I wanted to do with my life”.

His statement clearly stated he was fond of what he did with life. Patrick also received honors as a tribute to the ESPN network.
