Nazim Kadri | Early Playing Career

Since his first step on the ice at two, Nazem has pushed himself to become a better hockey player.

Kadri started playing minor hockey for the London Jr. Knights of the NHAO’s AAA Pavilion League.

Then the Canadian player participated in the 2003 All-Ontario Peewee Championships held in Markham, Ontario. Along with the 2005 All-Ontario Championships in Thunder Bay.

Before moving to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 2006-07, Nazem was a key member of the MHAO championship teams.

After being selected in the first round, 18th overall, of the 2006 OHL Priority Selection, Kadri became more active with the Kitchener Rangers.

Likewise, Nazem played 68 games in the second season and recorded 25 goals and 40 assists.

And in the year’s playoffs, he helped the Rangers to an OHL Championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup final but sadly lost to the Spokane Chiefs.

Later in the 2007-08 season, the OHL traded Nazem to the London Knights in exchange for other draft picks.

Then, he played 56 games and recorded 25 goals and 53 assists. Sadly, his broken jaw made him sit out most of the game during the season, including the ADT Canada Russia Challenge.

The Toronto Maple Leafs

The following season, Kadri suited up for the Western Conference as Kadri was picked to play in the OHL All-Star Classic.

Similarly, the next season, Nazem was again traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, with whom he signed a three-year, entry-level contract on July 6, 2009.

However, Nazem returned to Team OHL after being cut from the team and was selected to play in the 2009 Subway Super Series.

Not to mention, he also made his second appearance in the OHL’s All-Star Game. In addition, the CHL awarded him the player of the week following his nine points record in three games.

In April of 2010, Kadri was named the league’s player of the month, recording 26 points in just ten games.

Professional Hockey Career

Since he could walk, Kadri, who has been playing, finally played professionally with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

During the 2009-10 season, Nazim played in six pre-season games and recorded three goals with two assists.

Since he failed to reach the standard of head coach Ron Wilson’s expectation, the young Kadri was returned to the Knights.

But in 2010, following the injury of forwards Christian Hanson and Fredrik Sjostrom, Nazim was called up to the Leafs.

With this, Kadri made his NHL debut on February 8, 2010, against the San Jose Sharks.

Though he was likely to stay with the Leafs, Wilson’s and then-general manager Brian Burke’s comments indicated otherwise.

Moreover, Burke was biased against rookies who gained experience in the American Hockey League (AHL) before NHL.

Despite many problems and possibilities, Nazim finally cut with the Leafs. And on November 16, he recorded his first NHL point against the Nashville Predators.

Two days later, Kadri recorded his first multi-point against the New Jersey Devils. Following his first NHL career goal against Boston Bruins, Nazim was named to the AHL All-Star Game.

Kadri began training under former NHL player and maple Leaf Gary Roberts to hone his hockey skills and play more explosively.

Likewise, in the 2012-13 NHL season, Kadri made the starting roster for the Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens.

Things looked better after that for young Nazem as he kept making progress and scored points along the way.

Kadri even scored his first career hat trick in a match against the New York Islanders.

Becoming A Better Center And Colorado Avalanche

After his stellar performance and progress, the Leafs signed Nazim under a two-year contract worth $5.8 million.

But Kadri faced numerous suspensions either for close contact with players or for his lack of punctuality.

Despite the setbacks, Kadri ended the season with 39 points in 73 games, leading all Toronto Centers in goals.

During the 2016-2017 season, Kadri suffered from other suspensions. He was even fined $5000 for his season’s second and third diving infractions.

However, Nazem showed no drawbacks in his game and was lauded by the Leafs for his penalty-drawing abilities.

That season alone, Kadri set a league-leading best of 49 penalties, including 45 points and 28 assists.

Likewise, in 2017, Kadri scored his 100th career NHL goal against the Calgary Flames. This season too, Nazem faced numerous suspensions that cost the team heavily.

Finally, after spending ten years with the Leafs, Nazem was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on July 1, 2019.

Kadri and Callie Rosen were exchanged for Tyson Barrie, Alexander Kerfoot, and a sixth-round pick in 2020.

His linemates include names like Brandon Saad, Andre Burakovsky, and many others.

The NHL resumed its standard competition structure for the 2021–22 season.

It would be Kadri’s best season yet, as he scored 28 goals and had 59 assists, both new career highs.

He scored more than one point per game for the first time in his career. Kadri was on track to surpass the 100-point mark for the first time in his career before suffering an upper-body injury in March.

He returned for the regular season’s final games after missing eight.
