NBA Legend Julius Erving Remarried After Divorcing His First Wife Due To A Cheating Scandal

He is happily married now!

Julius Erving, famously known as “Dr. J,” is often remembered as a basketball icon, a player whose elegance, aerial artistry, and competitive dominance changed the game forever.

Yet off the court, Erving’s personal life told a much more complicated story of public divorce from his first wife, Turquoise Erving, after more than three decades of marriage.

Julius Erving Divorced From Wife In 2003 And Again Re-Married

The couple’s split in 2003 marked the end of a marriage long plagued by infidelity, scandal, and deeply emotional confrontations.

He had an affair with sportswriter Samantha Stevenson, which led to the birth of a daughter, Alexandra Stevenson, a future professional tennis player.

In his 2013 memoir “Dr. J: The Autobiography,” Erving opened up candidly about the affair and its emotional toll on Turquoise.

He recounted a violent altercation that erupted when she discovered a letter from Samantha revealing her pregnancy.

Erving wrote,

“As she’s reading the letter, she’s torn between finishing it and unleashing a haymaker. She’s pounding me… throwing punches I try to parry. Then come the teacup, spoon, pots, and more.”

Erving admitted he had hit his wife, but, as he claimed, only in self-defense.

His confessions stirred controversy, not just for their content, but for his seeming detachment in describing the scenes.

He wrote that while he was “not inclined toward confrontation,” the moments of violence were triggered by her rage.

The affair with Stevenson wasn’t the only infidelity that impacted his marriage.

In 2003, the same year of his divorce from Turquoise, Erving fathered a second child out of marriage, Justin Kangas, with a woman named Dorýs Madden.

The relationship with Madden would eventually blossom into something more permanent.

Julius Erving married Dorýs Madden in 2008, five years after his divorce, and the couple went on to have three children together.

They later relocated from Utah to Buckhead, Georgia, where they became involved in managing a golf and country club, building a quieter life away from the spotlight.

Julius Erving’s Legacy Still Stands Tall

Despite the chaos of his personal life, Erving remained a celebrated figure in the basketball world.

He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993, named to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary Team in 1996 and again to the 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, and continued to be recognized for his contributions to the sport.

Still, his legacy is now viewed as both triumphant and tragic, a tale of basketball greatness intertwined with very human flaws.

For fans, Julius Erving will forever be the man who revolutionized the game, but his divorce from Turquoise Erving remains a reminder that even legends live imperfect lives off the court.
