Rohit Sharma Bio | Background and Childhood

Rohit Sharma, the reliable cricketer of India, was born on 30th April 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, to father Gurunath Sharma and mother Purnima Sharma. 

His younger brother’s name is Vishal Sharma. Sharma’s father worked in a transport firm storehouse as a caretaker. 

So, Sharma’s uncles and grandparents raised him in childhood due to his father’s low income. 

He lived in Borivali, and his parents lived in Dombivli. But during weekends, he visited his parents in living in a single-room house.

Later, in 1999 Sharma’s uncle admitted him to a youth cricket camp. But, looking at his cricket talent, his coach Dinesh Lad wanted him to get proper training. 

Later Dinesh requested Sharma to attend Swami Vivekanand Internationa School, where he was their head coach. 

Likewise, the cricket facilities and training were also better than the school Sharma was studying at. Sharma also got a scholarship, and in his four years at school, he sharpened his cricketing skills.

During his early days, he began as an off-spinner. However, Dinesh observed Sharma’s batting ability and asked him to open the innings.

International Career

Test 

Sharma made his test debut in 2013 during Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series against West Indies at Eden Gardens. 

In the match, he scored 177 runs, the second-highest runs by the Indian. In the next match in Wankhede Stadium, he scored an unbeaten 111.

Later, he did not make it into the India test team until the 2018 season. Then Sharma earned a call-up in the 2018-19 Australia tour. He scored 101 in three innings and returned to India after the birth of his daughter. 

During his third test in South Africa in 2019, Sharma scored his first test double century (212 runs).

In the 2021 England Tour of England, Sharma played an instrumental role by helping India win the series by scoring 345 runs. 

Later, when India played a maiden away series against England, Sharma made his first overseas Test 100, scoring 127 runs.

ODI career

Early Years

On 23rd June 2007, Rohit Sharma made his international debut against Ireland in Belfast.

During that time, he batted at number 7, so he did not bat, but the team won by nine wickets. Later, Sharma scored his first ODI half-century (52 runs) against Pakistan in the same year.

After that, he made it into the Indian squad for the Commonwealth Bank series against Australia. In the series, he scored 235 runs, including two fifties. However, after the emergence of Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli, he lost in place in the team. 

But after Sachin Tendulkar decided to rest for the tri-nation series in Bangladesh, he got his opportunity. 

Then on 28th May 2010, Sharma scored his first ODI century (114 runs) in the match against Zimbabwe. He also scored unbeaten 101 runs in the next match against Sri Lankans.

However, his poor performance in South Africa meant he lost his spot in the 2011 WC squad. Luckily, Sharma managed to earn his place back in the ODI team in India’s away series against West Indies. 

Next year, he had a disastrous year scoring 168 runs in the whole 2012 calendar season. But India captain MS Dhoni showed faith in him.

Then in the 2013 ICC Champions trophy, he revived his career, scoring 177 runs in the tournament, including two fifties. 

He continued his good form, and on an Australia tour of India in 2013, he scored his first double century (209 runs).

Later, on 13th November 2014, Sharma scored the highest runs in international ODI (264 runs) against Srilanka. 

In 2017, Rohit Sharma got his first international ODI captaincy after Virat Kohli opted to rest in the Srilanka series. 

In March 2019, Sharma scored 56 runs to mark his 800th run in ODI international matches. Moreover, he became the highest run-scorer in the calendar year in the same year with 1,490 runs. 

Furthermore, for his amazing performance in the 2019 season, Sharma was named ODI Player of the Year. 

ICC ODI Cricket World Cups

Rohit Sharma made his first ODI World Cup appearance in 2015. In the tournament, he scored 330 runs, including one century (137 runs against Bangladesh).
