Ron Artest, an American former professional basketball player, spent 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The Chicago Bulls selected him in the first round of the 1999 NBA draft, and he played for five other teams in the NBA.

He earned the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2004, a year in which he was also named an NBA All-Star and received All-NBA honors.

As a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, he secured an NBA championship in 2010 by defeating the Boston Celtics.

He was initially known as Ron Artest until 2011 and adopted the name Metta World Peace from 2011 to 2020.

Ron Artest Parents: Father’s Impact Through Adversity

Ron’s father, a Navy veteran and former Golden Gloves boxer from Philadelphia, imparted his love for boxing to him, hoping that engaging in sports would steer him away from trouble.

Concerned about Ron’s temper potentially becoming a stumbling block in his life, Ron Sr. aimed to shield him from the prevalent drugs and violence in Queensbridge.

At the tender age of 8, Ron’s volatile behavior surfaced when he put his hands around another boy’s throat in a school cafeteria, prompting his father to take proactive measures.

Ron’s father enrolled him in anger management therapy, where the counselor recommended basketball as a constructive outlet for Ron’s emotions.

Reflecting on his son’s temperament, Ron Sr. acknowledged the challenges posed by their neighborhood but emphasized that Ron has never exhibited criminal tendencies.

Making things worse, he had to witness his parents’ divorce in 1992 and the tragic death of his sister Quanisha from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in 1995.

The rough experiences, including his father striking his mother, have undoubtedly shaped Ron’s struggle with anger throughout his life.

Beyond the Hardwood: Raised By Single Mother

Ron Artest entered the challenging period of adolescence just as his parents were parting ways.

Following the separation, his mother, Sarah Artest, was responsible for raising a large family single-handedly, demonstrating remarkable resilience and strength.

Navigating the hurdles of a neighborhood marked by crime and poverty, Ron confronted numerous challenges that could have easily steered him towards a troubled path.

Yet, amid adversity, basketball emerged as a sanctuary and a beacon of hope for the young Ron.
