Together with her sister, Sam grew up in Hanson, Massachusetts, and attended the local high school, Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.

Later the star player enrolled in the University of California, Los Angeles, and played for their team.

After competing with each other for their whole childhood and youth, the two sisters went on separate paths in college. Kristie stayed close to home and went to Boston College, while the younger Mewis went to UCLA

In college, we both became our own people which made us closer than ever. She is my best friend and I need her so much,” Sam said.

Even now, they both watch each other’s games and support each other in every possible way.

Under her father’s coaching and competitive play with her sister, Sam Mewis grew as a player in the field. From her high school days, Sam has been a star player for her team.

In 2011, Sam was named Gatorade Massachusetts Girls Soccer Player of the Year for the second time.

That same year, she was named ESPN RISE All-American after scoring 30 goals and providing eight assists. 

She continued the streak in college and represented UCLA Bruins from 2011 to 2014. In her junior years, Mewis helped UCLA win the Pac-12 championship and the first NCAA Championship

However, her professional career began after she signed with the Pali Blues in the W-League in 2013. That year, they won the western conference title and national championship.

After her remarkable performance in the Pali Blues, Sam was selected fourth overall by the Western New York Flash during the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League entry draft.

She started in all 20 seasons as a regular, scoring four goals and four assists, sharing the leaderboard with Lynn Williams.

Similarly, on September 9, 2015, Mewis was nominated as the finalist for the NWSL Rookie of the Year Award. Around January 9, 2017, the Western New York Flash was sold to new ownership and moved to North Carolina

After that, their club rebranded as the North Carolina Courage. Mewis had a very successful season with six goals and three assists for the club.

However, the following year, Sam did not play in her best form. Because of her knee injury, Mewis missed the beginning of the 2018 season.

She only played for 17 regular games BUT gave her 100% in all of them. Her Jersey with number 3 barely missed the eyes of spectators, that were delighted by her plays.

The midfielder played in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup as the 2020 National Women’s Soccer League season was affected by Covid-19. She made 5 appearances and scored 1 goal.

Manchester City

The American midfielder signed with Manchester City of the English FA WSL on August 10, 2020. She made her debut for the club as a substitute in the 2020 Women’s FA Community Shield game against Chelsea.

Mewis made 32 appearances for the Citizens and found the back of the net 16 times. She was also named to the FA WSL PFA Team of the year.

Return To North Carolina Courage

The former Manchester City player returned to North Carolina Courage on May 17, 2021. In her second stint with the club, she made 5 appearances and scored 1 goal.

Kansas City Current

Mewis’s time at North Carolina Courage ended in less than a year; on November 30, 2021, she was signed by Kansas City Current in exchange for Kiki Pickett and the 3rd overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft.

The American midfielder played for the United States under-17 team. Sam’s sister Kristie also represented the national team, becoming the first sisters to represent the United States at a Women’s World Cup.

Sam was called to represent the senior national team for friendlies against Canada and Russia on January 24, 2014. Although, she made her debut in a match against Sweden at the Algarve Cup in 2014.

After not so impressive performance, she was dropped out of the squad. However, she was again invited to the senior team.

In 2017, Sam became one of three players to appear in every game for the US Women’s National Team.

Sam suffered a knee injury in November 2017, forcing her to miss the 20148 SheBelieves Cup. Later, she returned to her international duty in June 2018 against China.

In 2020, she altogether appeared in 8 matches for the national team and scored 4 goals and was named the 2020 US Soccer Female Player of the Year for the first time in December 2020.

The USA Women’s National Team also won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and Sam was also present in the squad.

On January 18, 2021, she reached another milestone after scoring her first career hat-trick in a 4-0 win against Colombia and her sister Kristie scored the other goal.
