Tre Jones | Early Life

On January 8, 2020, Tre Jones was born to his parents Rob Jones and Debbie Jones, in Apple Valley, Minnesota. He has two older brothers and a half-brother.

He belongs to a family where everyone aspires to be a basketballer. Everyone is a sports athlete. His mother has been a big influence on his life, as her mother herself was a coach professionally and personally, too, in Tre’s case.

Tre certainly claims, “Ever since I was a young kid, there have been so many dreams for me with basketball, and she’s done everything she can to put me in the right positions to succeed.”

As per reports, while singing for the National Letter of Intent to Duke in August 2017, he said he had plans to study kinesiology when he was in Durham, North Carolina.

Apart from it, Tre also features a leg tattoo that is his name. Also, he has a skull in it. 

Family

Not much has been revealed and discussed with their parents on the internet, but Tre’s father was a professional basketball player. And his two older brothers, namely Tyus and Jadee.

Tyus was a former NCAA Champion in 2015 for Duke and is a professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association.

Jadee also used to play college basketball for Furman Paladin’s Men’s Basketball Team and now is a basketball coach at Apple Valley High School. He is also a personal trainer in the gym when it comes to guiding Tre.

Additionally, Tre’s plan to study kinesiology was influenced by Jadee, his oldest brother.  He stated- “My oldest brother works us out and knows a lot about the body because he studied kinesiology in college. That stuff really interests me, Atoo.”

Tre has a half-brother, namely Reggie Brunch, who plays at Robert Morris University.

He was the grandson of Dennis Deutsch, a member of the United States Armed Forces.

Jones attended Apple Valley High School and played basketball for the Varsity team in Apple Valley, Minnesota.

He initially started playing in eighth grade and became a starter for the next season, ninth grade. He led his team to Minnesota 4A state titles two times in 2015 and 2017.

Tre won the Gatorade Player of the Year award in Minnesota in 2016-17. His brother Tyus was also the winner of the same award in 2014.

Tre managed to average 23.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in the 2016–17 season. He also received McDonald’s All-American and Minnesota Mr. Basketball awards after his senior season.

Tre was ranked No. 6 overall and the No. 1 rated point guard in 2018 by the 24/7 Composite list, and Scouts.com.ESPN ranked him as the No. 10 overall prospect and No. 1 point guard in the class of 2018.

Similarly, Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 7 overall prospect and the No. 3 guard in the class of 2018.

This was all after he chose to be the Duke player over UCLA, USC, Ohio State, Minnesota, and Oregon University.

Freshman year (2018-2019)

Jones started his college career with Duke on November 6, 2018. He led his team to take over Kentucky at the Champions Classic, averaging 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists in a  118–84 win.

Jones again held his team to a 69–58 triumph over Texas Tech, chipping 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals.

Unluckily, Jones was troubled with a shoulder injury on January 14, 2019, when he was put on a clash with Frank Howard of Syracuse. His situation got miserable, and he had to miss two games in the season.

Jones made a comeback on January 26, when he was placed against  Georgia Tech. Overall, he scored  9.4 points for the freshman season, 5.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game in 36 games for the Duke Blue Devils.

Sophomore year (2019-2020)

The Dukes declared Jones’s return for the 2019-20 season on April 8, 2019. He averaged 15 points in his first match of the sophomore season, a 68-66 win over Kansas.

He proved himself again by notching 31 points in a 74-63 victory over Georgia State, which was also a highlighted part of his career. This was on November 15.

Jones achieved 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed six assists against Notre Dame (2/15).

Not only that, he recorded 24 points at Wake Forest (2/25), shooting 7-of-18 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line and grabbing nine assists and seven boards in 47 minutes.

Jones led his team to win at Boston College (2/4) and North Carolina (2/8). He was honored with ACC Co-Player of the Week after leading Duke to win over at No. 11 Michigan State (12/3) and Virginia Tech (12/6), scoring 17.5 points and 8.0 assists.

Jones made a powerful presence when he scored 31 points against Georgia State. And, he scored more than 30 points in Duke history.

Luck did not favor him again, and Jones had to miss out on the games against Wofford and Brown. This was due to his not-so-severe foot injury in late December.

On average, Jones scored 16.2 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game as a sophomore. As a consequence of his laudable playing style, he was named ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

Jones was titled second-team All-American by USA Today. Similarly, he was named third-team All-American by the Associated Press, Sports Illustrated, and CBS Sports.

Moreover, it came out as no surprise when he got voted to the USBWA District III All-District Team. He stood a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year.

National Team Career

He played at the  2015 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship in Argentina for the United States, coming to his national team career. 

And led his team to win the gold medal recording 19 steals in the competition. He was the second player to break the record of American under-16 after Malik Newman in 2013.

His plan on NBA Draft 2020

It’s not even a year that Jones had declared for NBA Draft 2020. As per sources, he has not been selected yet, but there are high chances for him to be hired after Duke’s powerpack performance.

According to USA Today Sports, Jonas has spoken to the teams that would highly choose him, like the Milwaukee Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder. He has also been working out with his brother Tyus.

There are predictions that he will be a mid-to-late first-round pick.
