On May 9, 2000, Trey Lance was born to Carlton and Angie Lance in Marshall, Minnesota. His father, Carlton Lance, is black, and his mother, Angie, is white. So, Trey has mixed ethnicity. 

Lance’s father, Carlton, is a retired football player at Southwest Minnesota State as a cornerback. Carlton played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League and the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football. 

As Trey’s father is also associated with football, naturally, he was also attracted to it. As soon as he began to walk, he played with the ball. Carlton saw the potential and began to train him.

Lance played as running back in the team, but his father told him to play as a quarterback in middle school. Carlton could see the hidden talent in him. Before that, Trey never thought of playing as a quarterback.

Lance was chosen as a quarterback by the colleges in the Group of Five conferences or the Football Championship Subdivision. Eventually, he went to North Dakota State in December 2017.

College Career

Lance played two games in the 2018 season and had 2 touchdowns. He could play limited games in the season. 

In 2019, Lance started the game, and his team entered the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game. He was the MVP of the game with a 28-20 win. 

Lance passed the ball 287 times for 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions in the season’s final game. Zero interception with 287 passes was an NCAA record. He ran 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns in that season. 

Trey received the Walter Payton Award as the FCS’s most outstanding offensive player and the Jerry Rice Award as the top NCAA FCS player.

The 2020 season was delayed due to the global pandemic. As a result, Lance could only play in one game in October 2020. Lance passed for 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in the match was against Central Arkansas.

San Francisco 49ers

In the 2021 season, Lance was the second quarterback. He debuted in Week 1 and passed a five-yard touchdown against the Detroit Lions. The 49ers had a win of 41-33. 

In Week 3, Lance recorded 1 touchdown in two plays against the Green Bay Packers and lost 28-30.

In Week 4, Lance made 9 passes for 157 yards, 2 touchdowns, and ran 41 yards against the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately, the 49ers again lost the match with 21-28. 

Lance replaced injured Garoppolo and was the starting quarterback for the next game. He made 15 passes for 192 yards, 1 interception, and ran 89 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. Unluckily, he suffered a knee injury during the game.

The athlete was absent in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts due to the injury. Nate Sudfeld replaced him as the second quarterback, and Garoppolo was back in the game. He was  Garoppolo’s backup in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears in a 33–22 win. 

In Week 11, Lance was back in the match against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He ran 7 yards in the 30-10 win.

Lance was the second quarterback for 5 consecutive weeks. Garoppolo had a thumb injury in the sixth week, and Lance was back as starting string against the Tennessee Titans in a 17-20 loss. 

In Week 17, Lance passed for 249 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in a 23-7 win. It was his first victory. 

Lance was the second start in the final game against the Los Angeles Rams.
