Injury

In the second half of the Colorado Buffaloes’ 78-73 win over the Flyers in the first round of the NIT in 2019, Bey’s left leg was rolled from behind by a Dayton player while battling for a rebounding position in the paint.

Bey collapsed to the ground, unsure whether he needed to grab his knee or his ankle. It turned out that the pain was coming from both, though neither his knee nor his ankle had been seriously injured.

Bey, who was named the Pac-12 Conference’s Most Improved Player and a first-team all-league selection that season, was expected to return to the starting lineup for the Buffs when they faced eighth-seeded Norfolk State in the second round.

He had already recorded his 16th double-double of the season and his 10th during an 11-3 run by the Buffs. In addition, he finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds against the Flyers when he was injured.

Tyler Bey: Family

Tyler Bey takes his mother as an inspiration. Her name is Toya Mays, about whom he has talked a lot in an interview.

He described himself as a troubled adolescent. He’d be working at McDonald’s or in trouble with some of his friends if it weren’t for basketball.

He was always out, not going to school, and performing poorly in class. According to him, that was difficult. His mother had no choice but to send him to live with his aunt.

They were pretty strict over there because she lived in a different part of Vegas, and also, his uncle is a cop. That completely changed his life.

Tyler used to see Jamal Bey, his cousin and a Washington basketball player, play the game. When they were younger, he used to go to their games. Tyler got into basketball because of his cousin.

Struggle

Bey claims that he will never forget his past, where he came from, what he has witnessed, or what he has experienced.

It was just him, his mother, and his sister when he was growing up. There is no information about his father’s whereabouts.

Tyler has been watching his mother struggle since the beginning. So it wouldn’t be good enough for her and his family if he didn’t go out there and compete.

So all of the struggles they’ve been through, all of the struggles he’s seen his mother go through, are what motivates him. He claims that he always wants to see his mother happy.

Like every mother, she’s always been there for him. It was a nightmare for him when he was in prep school.

He was thoroughly dissatisfied with the experience. She would be there for him when he wanted to go home, telling him he had to push through it.

“She was simply being a mother, a mentor, and a support system for me. She’s a wonderful woman, and I admire her far more than she realizes, “he stated.
