Early Life, Family & Initial Career

Jose Manuel Calderon was born on September 28, 1981, in Villanueva de la Serena, Spain.  He is the only child of his parents, Jose Calderon Sr. and Lola Borrallo.

He often accompanied his father during his matches and watched him during his practice sessions. However, his father was not a full-time player and worked as a mechanic in a factory.

He attended a local school in his small hometown and played the sport with his friends. Moreover, he was interested in playing football as it had always been popular in Spain.

However, he found that he was pretty good at playing basketball and decided to commit to it fully.

While he was still playing for the local teams, he could play for the Spanish U-18 team in FIBA Europe Championship in 1998.

After leading them to victory, the Diputacion Foral Alava offered him to play in the Second Division Spanish League.

His father was already okay with his decision to start his professional career in basketball. So, he was happy that his son followed in his footsteps.

Lola was also proud that her son made it to the professional League despite coming from a very simple family background.

Jose entirely dedicated himself to practicing basketball and improving his skills. He was already quite skillful, yet he practiced hard and became a better sportsman.

With his teammates’ motivation and familial support, he later played in the Spanish Second Division League and Liga ACB.

Jose Calderon | Career

European Career

Jose began his professional career while he was still a teenager. After training with the Alava and playing briefly for them, he joined the Spanish basketball club Lucentum Alicante in 1999.

He played very well and even successfully led his team from the Second Division League to the Liga ACB. But unfortunately, even though he tried hard to secure his team’s place in the league, his team was relegated again.

However, Calderon did not give up, due to which he played the ACB with the new club, Fuenlabrada. After playing for them in the 2001-02 season, he signed with TAU Vitoria.

In the meantime, Jose had declared for the NBA draft in 2003, but sadly, he remained undrafted.

However, he continued playing good games in the Liga ACB for the same club until the Toronto Raptors of the NBA recruited him in 2005.

NBA Career

Calderon was having a good time in the Liga ACB when the Toronto Raptors’ GM Rob Babcock requested him to join their team.

As it was always his dream to play in the NBA, Jose immediately agreed.

The Raptors team management had seen him as one of the best guards; hence they gave him more playtime even though it was his rookie season.

But, sadly, he had a disappointing first season in which he did not even manage to score just over 5.0 points per game.

He played as a second-choice shooting guard for the Raptors in the second season. Even though he usually stepped down on the court, substituting T.J. Ford during the matches, he had much better stats.

Jose played five more NBA seasons for the Raptors. His performance in all these seasons was terrific, and he was already one of the most capable playmakers in the NBA when they traded to the Detroit Pistons.

Meanwhile, he played one successful season for the Dallas Mavericks.

Later on, Jose played for the New York Knicks for two seasons. Sadly, he missed many matches in his first season due to a tendon injury. To fully recover, Calderon had to go through surgery.

Then, he played for other NBA clubs such as Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, etc. He contributed to helping the Cavaliers reach the playoffs in 2018.

Moreover, he appeared briefly for the Atlanta Hawks in 2017. He played 17 matches for them in the 2016-17 season, in which he averaged shallow points per game.

Since then, he has never regained his form. Instead, his performance descended downhill, and his games with the Cavaliers were forgetful.

Eventually, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded him to his former club, Detroit Pistons, on July 7, 2018.

National Team Career

Jose Calderon began representing his national team when he was around 17 years old. He first represented Spain in the 1998 FIBA European Under-18 Championship, in which they won the gold.

Since then, he has represented his country in numerous international tournaments and has won various big trophies. He even led his country to win the FIBA World Cup in 2006.

Moreover, Jose had an important part when they won the EuroBasket in 2011 held in Lithuania. Similarly, he has won multiple trophies and medals, playing for his country on different occasions.

Seeing his overall career trajectory, Calderon is the most successful while representing Spain in the international arena. However, he eventually retired from his national career in 2016 after the Summer Olympics.

After retiring from his playing career, he briefly worked as the special assistant to the executive director of the NBA in the 2018-19 season. Currently, he is working as a special advisor in the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Net Worth, Salary & Career Earnings

According to sources, Jose Calderon has an estimated net worth of around $35 million.

However, some years before, there was a rumor that he had supposedly inherited a fortune from his father worth $2.2 billion, a stake in a Coca-Cola bottling company named FEMSA. But, it was soon debunked.

Anyway, getting back to his real thing here, his primary source of earnings was through the league games.

He had already started earning when he began playing in the Spanish League as a very young man. But, we do not have any information regarding his income before the NBA.

After joining the Toronto Raptors in 2005, the club offered him around $2.1 million. He collected nearly $39 million from his next six seasons with the Raptors.

Furthermore, Jose received $11 million from the Detroit Pistons for his single season.

On July 11, 2013, the Dallas Mavericks signed him on a contract worth $28 million for four years.

The Mavericks paid him about $6.7 million for the 2013-14 season, after which he left them.

After that, he played for five different NBA clubs until he retired in 2019. He accumulated a wealth summing up to approximately $82 million from his NBA career.

Moreover, he earned a lot of money through brand endorsements and march sales. In addition, various program organizers invite him as a speaker in events for which he gets paid as he is a prolific speaker.
