Valentina Shevchenko is a professional mixed martial artist and former Muay Thai fighter from Kyrgyzstan and Peru.

She competes in the women’s Flyweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and has held the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship.

Born March 7, 1988, Valentina was highly influenced by by older sister, and she too began Taekwondo at age 5.

Alongside Taekwondo, she also began her kickboxing career in 2000, and only at the age of twelve she knocked out a 22-year-old opponent.

Valentina then permanently moved to Peru with her sister and began training for MMA. She made her professional debut in mixed martial arts at the age of 15 on April 21, 2003, against fellow debuting fighter Eliza Aidaralieva. She won the fight via TKO in the second round.

As of March 7, 2023, she is ranked #1 in the women’s flyweight rankings and #3 in the UFC women’s pound-for-pound rankings as of August 22, 2023.

Antonina Shevchenko, the sister of Valentina Shevchenko, was born on November 20, 1984, making her two years older than Valentina.

She is a mixed martial artist and a Kyrgyzstani-Peruvian Muay Thai fighter who competes in the flyweight division of UFC. 

Antonina’s fighting career started at a young age as a kickboxer. She has competed in a total of 40 professional kickboxing and Muay Thai fights, winning 39 of them and losing only one.

She has also won four gold medals, one bronze, and one silver medal at the IFMA World Championships, as well as a silver medal at the IFMA Royal World Cup.

Antonina is a former WKC K1 and Muay Thai Champion, a former Phoenix FC Muay Thai Champion, and a former Lion Fight Muay Thai Champion with two title defenses.

She made her MMA debut in 2002, just one year before Valentina’s debut.

Besides martial arts, Antonina is also a licensed pilot. In an interview with “Skies Magazine,” Antonina shared about her passion for flying, which she had since childhood.

On November 21, 2020, Antonina and Valentina Shevchenko made history by becoming the first pair of sisters to fight on the same card at UFC 255.

Antonina fought her rival, Ariane Lipski, and won with a TKO in the second round of the bout.

Later, Valentina also defeated her opponent, Jennifer Maia, and earned her fourth consecutive title defense. Both sisters winning their respective fights that night made the event even more memorable.

The famous Shevchenko sisters were born to a Russian-Ukrainian family in Frunze, Kirghiz SSR, which was a part of Russia at the time.

Their family held Soviet citizenship and later became citizens of Kyrgyzstan. Their mother, Elena Shevchenko, was a former multiple-time Muay Thai champion and the president of Kyrgyzstan’s national Muay Thai association.

Similarly, their father, Anatoly Shevchenko, played for the Kyrgyzstan national football team. He also served in the Pacific Fleet of the Soviet Navy for three years during the Cold War.
