Bryant Gumbel and his brother Greg Gumbel are the legendary sportscaster siblings who have inspired many men and women of color across the United States and the world.
On September 29, 1948, Bryant Charles Gumbel was born in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.
He is an American sportscaster and television journalist best known for co-hosting NBC’s Today for 15 years.
Since 1995, Gumbel has served as the host of the critically praised HBO investigative series.
His show, “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” was rated as flat-out TV’s best sports program by the Los Angeles Times.
His coverages included Major League Baseball, collegiate basketball, and the National Football League.
The sportscaster presented the prime-time coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics from Seoul and the PGA Tour in 1990 for NBC.
He is also an actor and writer known for movies like Contact (1997), The Weather Man (2005), and Main Street (1985).
Bryant has also drawn criticism for his vocal support of friend and former Today Show host Matt Lauer.
While Lauer was a host of the show, there were solid allegations that he had harassed several Today employees sexually.
Bryant Gumbel Brother: Greg Gumbel
Greg Gumbel, another legendary sportscaster, is the older brother of Bryant Gumbel.
Greg is 78 years old, which makes him three years older than the 76 years old Bryant.
The older brother is most recognized for his work with CBS Sports, specifically for his coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament and the National Football League.
An interesting fact, he called the Super Bowl XXXV for the CBS network in 2001, making him the first African-American broadcaster to do so in the country.
Greg is married to the beautiful Marcy back in 1973. They welcomed their first and only daughter, Michelle, on May 12, 1969.
The couple and their married daughter Michelle all reside in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, area.
Currently, he is affiliated with CBS, but reports have suggested that Gumbel will leave the network’s NFL coverage.
Sources mention that he has already signed an extension with CBS, but he will step down as a play-by-play announcer for NFL games.
This all comes after Greg was open and honest about his opinions on the payments made to NFL broadcasters.
Bryant Gumbell Parents And Other Siblings
Bryant was born into the household of Rhea Alice LeCesne Gumbel and Richard Dunbar Gumbel.
Along with his parents, his family included his older brother Bryant and two sisters, Rhonda and Renee.
The family moved to a middle-class neighborhood in Chicago’s South Side when the children were very young.
Gumbel’s father Richard passed away long before the veteran sportscaster became well-known, but he was already motivated to make his father proud.
The veteran of World War II served in the Philippines, frequently battling the disease, but one particular incident struck out a little more than the others.
Richard had stopped moving when a doctor pulled him aside. The doctor then proceeded to remove his tonsils as he was seated on a rock.
There is not much information about his mother as she reportedly likes to keep comfort inside her own bubble.
In 2014, his sister Renee spent the night in jail after being apprehended by police for reportedly assaulting her ex-fiance.
Renee was detained after she slapped her ex-fiance, Steven Hamilton, the president of the popcorn company.
