Olympics 1984

Waldo’s first-ever Olympic appearance was in 1984. She competed in a solo event at the game in Los Angeles. Eventually, she won a silver medal at the solo event.

The synchronized program was added to the Olympic program only 2 months before the Summer Olympics 1984 began in Los Angeles.

Carolyn had no previous significant international solo records and was not even the top swimmer in the event from Canada.

However, she went on to perform tremendously after the Canadian favorites faltered in the preliminary rounds.

In the preliminary round, swimming to Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty,” Waldo built herself a 2.5-point lead in a figures competition that carried over to the final.

The solo champion of the 1984 Olympics, American swimmer Tracie Ruiz-Conforto could not overcome. 

“I felt so calm during this competition,” Waldo said. “I was kind of a numb brain, and I guess that’s good because sometimes my emotions get ahead of the competition.”

Further, she won gold medals in both solo and duet events. Waldo teamed with Michelle Cameron for the duet event, who was a Calgary native. 

The pair won many more duet competitions together. The duo won at Rome and Spanish Opens in 1985.

In addition to that, Waldo and Cameron won the FINA World Cup in 1985, the Spanish open in 1986, and the World Championship held in 1986.
