Cord Sandberg | Early Life, Education & Family

Cord Sandberg was born in Bradenton, Florida, on January 2, 1995. He was born to his parents Chuck Sandberg and Kelsie Sandberg. Currently, he is married to his wife, Haley Gray Sandberg. 

Athletic Father

It can be said that a lot of influence of Cord playing baseball comes from his father. Cord’s father, Chuck Sandberg, is a former baseball player who has played for the Boston Red Sox.

Chuck’s semi-professional career in baseball started at the University of Florida in 1979. Moreover, in the 1979 season, Chuck was named an All-Southeastern Conference first basemen. 

Also, Chuck contributed significantly to Florida’s season in 1979 as he led the team with 59 bases on balls. With his help, the team went on to win the SEC East Division.

Likewise, Chuck also was drafted in the MLB Draft. The Boston Red Sox picked Chuck in the ninth round of the 1979 MLB draft. Consequently, he went on to play three seasons of minor league baseball for the Bristol Red Sox. 

After retiring from playing baseball, Chuck became an assistant football coach at Manatee High School. He remained as an assistant coach from 1986 to 2014.

Sandberg accepted a scholarship from Mississipi State University and decided to play college football for them.

Baseball Career

Moving forward in Sandberg’s timeline, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Sandberg in the draft pick. Sandberg’s draft pick selection came on the third round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. 

However, despite signing for the Philadelphia Phillies, Sandberg signed for GCL Phillies in 2013. He spent the 2013 season with GCL Phillies, who are a minor league baseball team.

With GCL Phillies, the outfielder batted for .207 and scored two home runs and 14 RBIs in 48 games. 

Williamsport Crosscuters

After his one-year spell with the GCL Phillies, he signed for the Williamsport Crosscuters in 2014. The Williamsport Crosscuters is a part of the MLB draft league.

They play collegiate summer baseball. As a player for the Crosscuters, Sandberg compiled a .235/.267/345.

Moreover, he scored six home runs and 24 RBIs in a total of 66 games. 

Lakewood BlueClaws

Similarly, Cord Sandberg then signed for the Lakewood BlueClaws. The BlueClaws are another Minor League Baseball team (MiLB) and an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

There he compiled a batting average of .255. Moreover, he featured 129 times for the team and managed five home runs and 59 RBIs. 

Clearwater Threshers

After spending one season with the BlueClaws, Sandberg moved on to his next destination. Interestingly, his next destination would ultimately be another Minor League Baseball team.

In 2016, Sandberg signed for the Clearwater Threshers, a Minor League Baseball team and an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

With the Threshers, Sandberg compiled a batting average of .230. Moreover, he compiled four home runs and 23 RBIs in 94 games. 

After spending one year with the Threshers, Sandberg decided it was time to move on to his next destination. As a result, he signed to play for the Lakewood Clearwater in 2017.

Similarly, in the same season, he also managed to play for the Reading Fightin Phils and Lakewood BlueClaws.

With the two teams, as an outfielder, Sandberg successfully managed a batting average of .268. In 2017 alone, he featured 105 times for the three teams.

Likewise, during his spell at the three teams, he managed nine home runs and 42 RBIs. 

Football Career

Initially, when enrolling at Mississipi State, Sandberg wanted to play college football.

But as people say, “Life always doesn’t go as you want” he then began playing college baseball and was slightly detached from football.

However, after long years of playing baseball, Sandberg decided it was time to return to his favorite sport, football. He decided to return to football in 2018.

Likewise, Auburn University was the first university to offer him a scholarship in 2018.

Meanwhile, Sandberg also received scholarship offers from the University of Central Florida. Also, he had received walk-on offers from Louisiana State University and UCLA.

Auburn Tigers

Despite plenty of lucrative offers, Sandberg decided that Auburn University was the perfect fit for him.

Likewise, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn revealed that he was interested in Sandberg when he was a Tigers coordinator. 

In an interview, coach Gus revealed the following about Cord Sandberg.

“He came to camp and really caught my eye. We had a relationship before when he was considering not playing professional baseball.”

Gus then followed by praising how talented and smart he really is. 

“He’s an outstanding quarterback. He’s a veteran guy, which I think is always good for a quarterback room. He hasn’t played in a long time, but he’s a genius kid, and he was a very, very good high school quarterback.”

Unfortunately, at Auburn, Sandberg didn’t receive many opportunities to play. Instead, he was kept as a reserve quarterback for three seasons.

Similarly, he only appeared four times for the team and completed 7 out of 9 pass attempts for 114 yards.

Transfer to Eastern Kentucky

After failing to impress at Auburn, Cord entered the transfer portal in January 2021.

Likewise, on February 19, 2021, he announced that he had transferred to Eastern Kentucky University on Twitter. 

The transfer means that Cord will finish his college career playing at the NCAA Division. After the full completion of the transfer, Sandberg will become a graduate transfer at Eastern Kentucky. 

He will be a part of the Eastern Kentucky Colonels football team.
