Bembry’s Family Tragedy

Deandre and Adrian grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the Beatties Ford Road area. The area was ranked No. 1 in Charlotte in 2014 regarding violent crimes.

The brothers of different fathers lived in quite a rough area, but their mother did anything and everything to make them comfortable.

DeAndre had just earned a basketball scholarship at the University of St. Joseph, Philadelphia. The family had started living separately, but Potts often visited his elder brother on his campus.

Essence Bembry got a phone call at about 2 a.m. on June 10, 2016, from her younger one’s father, Rodney Potts. Rodney gave her the news that Adrian was shot and killed near the University of North Carolina, Charlotte campus.

Adrian’s family says it was the wrong place at the wrong time kind of thing. In fact, the twenty years old was attempting to be a peacemaker. Along with him, three other people were shot and wounded. However, Adrian was the only one to lose his life.

It was not the end of tragedies. DeAndre’ Bembry’s cousin, Hezikah Kelly, also passed in an accidental shooting in 2017. He was not just a cousin, but a best friend to DeAndre’.

Tattoos and Philanthropy

Bembry has tattoos on his left arm, dedicated to his late brother and cousin. He has embedded portraits of them.

By engraving portraits of his loved ones, Bembry not just had a part of them in his skin, but he also started indulging himself in the stuff that they liked.

For instance, Bembry, a picky eater, started loving the salads that his little brother ate and mushrooms that his cousin was fond of for the first time in his life.

 Bembry also wears the no. 25 jerseys in honor of Adrian, who was born in 1995.

Further, Essence and DeAndre’ established AP World, a charitable organization, in 2017. It aims to address issues related to gun violence.

The foundation was initiated with empathetic feelings for families that have to go through similar situations. It first started in a basketball camp and community event in Charlotte.

Since then, it has expanded, trying to prevent such incidents with education initiatives in inner-city neighborhoods like the Beatties Ford Road area, where DeAndre and Adrian grew up.

DeAndre’ Bembry – High School Basketball Career

Bembry first went to Rocky River High School, Mint Hill, North Carolina. He later transferred to St. Patrick High School.

He recorded 21.8 points and 9.0 rebounds on average as a senior in high school. He then grabbed a New Jersey All-State First Team selection.

Sophomore Year

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks had to lose four seniors while Bembry was in his sophomore year. Nonetheless, Bembry proved himself to be a good prospect by recording good scores.

He registered 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals. Moreover, he was named to the Atlantic-10’s All-Conference First Team.

Junior Year

Bembry was named to the Atlantic-10’s All-Conference First Team for the second time in his junior year. Also, he was honored with the Atlantic-10 Player of the Year award.

Deandre Bembry – Professional Basketball Career

The Atlanta Hawks drafted Bembry with the 21st overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft on June 23, 2016.

He then signed his rookie scale contract with the Atlanta Hawks on July 15, 2016.

Bembry debuted with the Atlanta Hawks’ on National Basketball Association (NBA) on October 27, 2016. It was a 114–99 season-opening win over the Washington Wizards.

He scored 2 points and 1 rebound in two minutes off the bench. He scored season-high 10 points twice, the latter in February 2017. 

Bembry had multiple assignments with the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA Development League, under the flexible assignment rule, while in rookie season.

He suffered from an injury on September 13, 2017. It was a strain in the right triceps.

He played for less than 900 minutes in the NBA matches for Atlanta Hawks until the 2019 season, his third year as an NBA player.
