Early Life And Family

DeAndre’ Bembry was born to his father and mother, Essence Bembry, on July 4, 1994, in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States.

DeAndre’ grew up with his younger half-brother, Adrian Pott. They shared the same mother.

DeAndre and Adrian were not just brothers but best friends. Unfortunately, Adrian was shot and killed outside of an apartment in Charlotte. Reportedly, Adrian was trying to break up a fight.

There is not a single day in Bembry’s life that goes by without reminiscing about his little brother.

In his little brother’s honor, DeAndre wears jersey number 95, the year Adrian was born.

Bembry’s Family Tragedy

Deandre and Adrian grew up in the Beatties Ford Road area of Charlotte. This area was ranked No. 1 in Charlotte regarding violent crimes in 2014.

The two brothers lived in a sketchy neighborhood, but their mother did anything and everything to make them comfortable.

DeAndre had just earned a basketball scholarship at St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia. The family had started living separately, but Potts often visited his elder brother at his campus.

Essence Bembry got a phone call at about 2 a.m. on June 10, 2016, from her younger one’s father, Rodney Potts. Rodney gave her the news that Adrian was shot and killed near the University of North Carolina, Charlotte campus.

Adrian’s family says it was the wrong place at the wrong time kind of thing. In fact, the twenty years old was attempting to be a peacemaker.

Along with him, three other people were shot and wounded. However, Adrian was the only one to lose his life.

It was not the end of tragedies. DeAndre’ Bembry’s cousin, Hezikah Kelly, also passed in an accidental shooting in 2017. The professional basketball player was close to his cousin, whose demise left him grieving.

Bembry has tattoos on his left arm dedicated to his late brother and cousin. He not only had the portrays of them inked on his skin, but he also started indulging himself in the stuff they liked.

The foundation was initiated with empathetic feelings for families that have to go through similar situations. It first started in a basketball camp and community event in Charlotte.

Since then, it has expanded, trying to prevent such incidents with education initiatives in inner-city neighborhoods like the Beatties Ford Road area, where DeAndre and Adrian grew up.

Bembry won the Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year in his freshman year. After missing four senior players, he led the team in scoring (17.7), rebounds (7.7), assists (3.6), and steals (1.9) in his sophomore season.

Simultaneously, he was named to the Atlantic-10’s All-Conference First Team in his sophomore and junior years. He was also honored with the Atlantic-10 Player of the Year award.

In his junior year, he contributed to leading the Hawks to a second NCAA berth in 3 years. In the conference title game against VCU, Bembry recorded 30 points on an efficient 13 for 16 shooting.

In the NCAA berth, the Hawks defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats in the first round before losing to the Oregon Ducks in the Round of 32.

Professional Basketball Career

The Atlanta Hawks drafted Bembry with the 21st overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft on June 23, 2016.

After signing a rookie scale contract, he made his NBA debut and recorded 2 points and 1 rebound in a 114-99 season-opening win over the Washington Wizards on October 27, 2016.

During the rookie season, Bembry had multiple assignments with the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA Development League under the flexible assignment rule.

The professional athlete sustained a strained right triceps and was ruled out for four-to-six weeks.

He was again ruled out for a month after suffering from a left adductor strain on January 5, 2018.

Bembry recorded a then career-high 16 rebounds in 29 minutes in a 111–104 win over the Dallas Mavericks on October 24, 2018.

He played for less than 900 minutes in the NBA matches for Atlanta Hawks until the 2019 season, his third year as an NBA player.

The young and talented player signed a two-year contract with Toronto Raptors worth $4 million. However, after less than a year with the Raptors, he was waived on August 3, 2021.

Soon after the waiver, Bembry signed with the Brooklyn Nets on August 8, 2021. His then career-high 18 points came in a 113-107 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

After being waived by the Nets on February 10, the Milwaukee Bucks signed the small forward on February 16, 2022.

In a 109-122 loss to the Golden State Warriors, Bembry sustained a right knee injury which was later diagnosed with a torn ACL and MCL, resulting in him missing the rest of the season. The Bucks waived him on April 7, 2022.
