On February 7, 1935, Herbert H. Kohl was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, to an immigrant family from Europe.

After attending Washington High School, he obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1956.

Similarly, he graduated with a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1958.

Additionally, upon completing graduate school, Kohl worked as an investor in real estate and the stock market.

Kohl served as a U.S. Senator for over 20 years before announcing his decision not to run in the 2012 Senate election.

Unfortunately, at the age of 88, the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame inductee passed away on December 27, 2023.

Did Herb Kohl Have Children?

The American Senator remained unmarried throughout his entire life, a decision to balance his work life.

He stated that maintaining a single status was his method of ensuring commitment to the demands of the U.S. Senate office and ownership of the Bucks.

Since he was never in any relationship, he had no children.

Nevertheless, he is survived by his older brother Sidney, his older sister Dolores, and his younger brother Allen.

Moreover, the director of Herb Kohl Philanthropies said,

“Throughout his life, Herb Kohl always put people first — from his employees and their families to his customers and countless charitable organizations and efforts.”

Kohl’s parentage traces back to Polish and Russian immigrants.

His father, Max Kohl, belonged to the Polish Jewish community, while his mother, Mary (née Hiken), was part of the Russian Jewish community.

Upon immigrating to the U.S., the Kohl family established Kohl’s department store for survival, gradually expanding their chain.

The Benevolent Bucks Owner Who Transformed Wisconsin

Kohl, a prominent figure in Wisconsin, acquired the Bucks to prevent them from relocating.

Moreover, he generously allocated funds from his fortune to support civic and educational causes throughout his state.

Kohl stood out as an unusual figure in the Senate, a body known for egos.

Herb operated quietly, not seeking credit, yet proved effective on issues crucial to the state, particularly in dairy policy.

Likewise, Kohl contributed $25 million to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to construct its new sports arena, subsequently named the Kohl Center.

He even decided not to run for 2012 Senator, saying,

“The office doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to the people of Wisconsin, and there is something to be said for not staying in office too long.”

Herb Kohl left an indelible impact on an incalculable number of lives.
